Make My Monday #163 is for Gift Card Holders

Welcome to MMM # 163.  Debbie chose the theme of gift card holders for the last challenge before the end of the year.  MMM will be on a break for the December 20, 2021 challenge.  When you are finished here, I hope you hop over to the challenge blog and see all the varied and very inspirational gift card holders!

Here’s my card:

If you’ve ever made a z-fold card, you can totally do this.  Even if you haven’t made a z-fold card, you can totally do this!  I really would rather not just give a person a gift card in a standard A2 card.  Making a special gift card holder just makes the simple, but very much appreciated, gift all the more meaningful.  I used the retired Seaside Spray cardstock and ribbon, along with the current Peaceful Place DSP.  For inspiration, I used one of Patty Bennett’s pins on Pinterest.  You can find her blog post and video here.

As you can see from her video, it’s just a matter of trimming two pieces of cardstock and scoring one of them.

What I Did to Create My Card:

  • I used Seaside Spray for the base of the card and the z-fold section.
  • Next, I trimmed a piece of the snowflake DSP to 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches and adhered it to the Seaside Spray cardstock.
  • Before I went any further, I grabbed my repositionable tape runner so I could dry-fit all the pieces.
  • Then, I matted the z-fold with a piece of silver foil.
  • I carefully trimmed down pieces of the Peaceful Place DSP so I had just the Christmas trees for the two outside and two inside z-fold panels. At this point, I also trimmed a piece to 6 inches by 2-1/2 inches for the envelope flap.
  • To create the pocket for the gift card on the inside panel, I simply trimmed that piece of the DSP 1-3/4 inches up from the bottom then adhered the pieces up against each other. This way, I still have the gorgeous DSP when the gift card is removed.
  • The sentiment on the very front is stamped in Seaside Spray and immediately covered with clear embossing powder, then heat set. The front sentiment and the sentiments on the outside two panels are from the October Paper Pumpkin kit. However, you can use any sentiment that will fit where you want it to live.
  • The very inside sentiment comes from the Merry Snowflakes stamp set. The trees, stamped in silver, come from the October Paper Pumpkin kit.
  • I needed to have a way to keep the fold closed. Therefore, I figured out where I needed the ribbon to tie in front so the sentiment wasn’t covered. I used a piece of tear-n-tape to adhere the ribbon to the snowflake DSP, then placed the silver-matted z-fold on top of the ribbon. I didn’t want to use dimensionals under the silver mat because the card already has bulk to it. Since I wanted the card to fit in a medium envelope, but needed the whole z-fold section to stay in place, I used three strips of tear-n-tape to adhere the silver foil to the DSP.
  • Finally, I added 8 basic rhinestone jewels randomly to the bottom layer of DSP. The 9th rhinestone lives right below the front sentiment.
  • With that, I had completed this gift card holder. It’s a basic z-fold, but easy enough to mass produce for my nieces and nephews.

Peaceful Place for the November Pals Blog Hop

Welcome to the Stampin’ Pretty Pals’ Blog Hop! This month, the theme is “Home for the Holidays”. We really hope that you enjoy and are inspired by them! As you hop from blog to blog, don’t forget to leave comments because we love hearing from you. You will find the lineup at the end of my post to help you “hop” along from Pal to Pal.

People say “three times a charm, and my card for this hop definitely qualifies.  I’d already created two cards that I thought I would use for tonight.  When I got to work this morning I changed my mind again and came home to create.

Lately, I have been reminiscing about times I have spent in the mountains in New York, New England, and California.  I miss them.  I miss the beauty of freshly fallen snow and the crispness of a winter day.  If I could, I would definitely go to the mountains for the holidays.

I previously posted another shaker card using the Beauty of the Earth DSP and the Whimsical Trees bundle.  You can see that card here.   That shaker card was definitely a learning experience, and the card for this hop was much easier to put together.

I wanted to keep this shaker card as clean as possible, and the neutral colors definitely make this a clean card.  I did use Night of Navy for the base just to add a bit of color.

Here’s my shaker card:

Measurements:

  • The Night of Navy base measures 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches, scored at 4-1/4 inches to create a tent card.
  • The snowflake DSP (designer series paper) measures 4-1/4 inches by 5-1/2 inches. I also trimmed a piece to 6 inches by 2-1/2 inches for the envelope flap.
  • I used glossy white cardstock for the underlayer. It measures 5-3/8 inches by 4-1/8 inches.
  • The cabin pattern DSP measures 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches.
  • As always, the white cardstock for the inside measures 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches.

What I Did — with Pictures:

  • I thought it would be much easier to explain what I did if I added a bunch of pictures.
  • The first thing I did was crop both the snowflake DSP and the glossy white cardstock using the layering diorama dies. For this card, I used the second and third largest dies. I cropped the DSP first, then laid that paper down on the glossy white so I could figure out where I had to crop the inner layering die.

  • Next, I grabbed my clear Wink of Stella and dabbed tiny dots on each pine tree on the cabin DSP pattern. I didn’t color or cover the whole tree, just dabs. As you know Wink of Stella is hard to catch in a picture, but, I tried. Interestingly, the tree at the top next to the A-frame cabin shows the sparkle the best.
  • I decided to do the Wink of Stella at this point because I wanted to make sure it dried thoroughly.
  • Next, I adhered the glossy white cardstock to the back of the snowflake DSP. Take your time with this step so you can get it right where you want it, which is essential.
  • HINT: If you use the multipurpose liquid adhesive for this step, you will have a few seconds to move the glossy white paper if needed.
  • My next step was to place the dimensionals on the back of the glossy white cardstock. When I made the first diorama card, I found that there’s no such thing as too many dimensionals when trying to make a shaker card. The dimensionals provide the height I wanted, but if each section isn’t supported well enough, the top will start to cave in on the shaker part. As you can see, I used regular and mini dimensionals, as well as the “bones” for the straight sections.

It’s Shaker Time:

  • Since I gave the Wink of Stella time to dry, I turned to the shaker part of the card.
  • I feel like cheating any time I use one of the clear medium envelopes to create a shaker card, but they make it so incredibly easy to do!
  • The DSP needs to be positioned so it is right down at the bottom of the envelope and in a corner.

  • Once the DSP is positioned, the extra flap of the clear envelope needs to be folded over and adhered. Trust me, you want to use something strong. In the above photo, you can see I chose to use the tear-and-tape. Remember that you want the open end of the envelope facing up.
  • HINT: First, burnish the tear-and-tape with your bone folder. Then you can use the spatula end of the Take-Your-Pick tool to gently lift the edge of the cover of the tape.
  • Next, I added the shaker “stuff” to the front side of the envelope. I used Kosher Salt with a very small amount of Dazzling Diamonds (glitter works as well), and some of the subtle shimmer sequins. It doesn’t take much stuffing, and a tablespoon in all is more than enough.
  • Since glitter sticks to EVERYTHING, the dabs of Wink of Stella will now have more of a shimmer, even though it was dried already.
  • Time to close the clear envelope. I used many strips of tear-and-tape when folding over and sealing the flap of the envelope. No matter how much anyone shakes this card, nothing will escape.
  • Next, I very, very carefully adhered the shaker card to the dimensionals on the back of the front of the card. I really took my time to make sure that I positioned it as centered as possible.
  • Then, I turned the layers over to add tear-and-tape to the back of the clear envelope so I could adhere the top to the base. Again, I used a bunch of tear-and-tape.

  • Once I had very, very carefully adhered the top to the base, I pressed down to make sure the tape adhered. There is no wiggle time with tear-and-tape, so don’t press down until you are sure of your placement.
  • Here’s a look at the front of the card after shaking all the stuffing:

Finishing Up:

  • I used a piece of scrap white cardstock for the front sentiment then cropped it. This sentiment comes from the Merry Snowflakes cling stamp set. Since I stamped it in Night of Navy, I outlined the sentiment panel using the same color marker.
  • I used my very favorite “Merry Christmas” sentiment from Perfectly Plaid and another sentiment from Merry Snowflakes for the inside.
  • Finally, I used Smoky Slate to stamps random snowflakes on the border of the inside panel and on the front bottom of the envelope.
  • All that remains was to trim the DSP on the envelope flap. Then I punched a coordinating piece of DSP using my 1 inch circle punch and ran it through the XYRON create-a-sticker.
  • With that, I’d finished my coordinated card/envelope/seal set.

More inspiration awaits, so use the lineup below to visit the rest of the Design Team. The Pals are excited to show you what they’ve created! Then, please mark your calendars for our next blog hop on December 8th. Our theme will be “My Favorite Things” with our design team showcasing some of their favorite products from any catalog they choose.

Until then, have fun in your craft space.

Shabby Chic Goes with Make My Monday #161

Welcome to the Make My Monday #161 challenge!  Meg chose shabby chic or vintage for this two-week challenge.  When you are finished here, I hope you will hop over to the challenge blog to see all the creations by the design team members.  They are all gorgeous!

Here’s my card:

I’ll admit, this one had me stumped for a couple of weeks.  I couldn’t decide what to do.  I finally just started going through my DSP (designer series paper) stash and found this cabin pattern from the Peaceful Place DSP.  When I looked at the reverse side of the paper, my thoughts came together and I started working on my card.

Measurements and Such:

  • The Basic Gray base measures 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches, scored at 4-1/4 inches.
  • I started with a 4-1/4 inch by 5-1/2 inch piece of white cardstock for the background. After running it through the Cut and Emboss machine using the Wintry 3D embossing folder, I trimmed it down to 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches.
  • I started with a 4-1/8 inch by 5 inch piece of DSP. In order to achieve a “shabby” look, I tore the cabin DSP starting about 2-1/2 inches from the 5-3/8 inch side.
  • Then, I tore another piece so I could use the reverse side of the paper.
  • Next, I used the Basic Gray ink pad and added ink to the all the sides of the DSP and cardstock that would show. I wasn’t neat about it at all because I wanted the variations to add to the shabby chic look.
  • After I layered the two pieces of DSP on the embossed white cardstock, I wrapped a piece of the black glittered organdy ribbon around the cabin side of the card. I tied it in a simple square knot because I thought it would work with the look I was trying to achieve.
  • Next, I stamped “Merry Christmas” using my very favorite Christmas sentiment from the Perfectly Plaid stamp set using Basic Gray ink. I quickly added some clear embossing powder to the sentiment and then heat set it. The embossing powder wasn’t an even layer, but I kind of like the shabby look of it.
  • I used the multipurpose liquid glue to adhere one of the Wonderful Snowflakes to the DSP. Then, I added dimensionals under the sentiment and adhered it down.

Finishing Touches:

  • I trimmed a piece of the cabin DSP to 6 inches by 2-1/2 inches for the envelope flap, which I adhered and trimmed. Since I needed a circular seal for the envelope, I punched a 1 inch circle from the DSP and ran it through my XYRON create-a-sticker maker. The cabin DSP is on the envelope flap and the randomly sparkly DSP is for the envelope seal. Matchy-matchy.
  • Next, I used the largest snowflake from Merry Snowflakes and stamped three partial snowflakes on the edges of the front of the envelope using a stamped-off Basic Gray image.
  • The white cardstock for the inside panel measures 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches. I also stamped three partial snowflakes on the edges of this cardstock.
  • Finally, I used one of the sentiments from Merry Snowflakes and stamped it in Basic Gray on the inside panel.
  • After adhering the inside down using multipurpose liquid adhesive, I’d finished this card/envelope/envelope seal coordinated set.

Flora or Fauna for October’s Sparkles Christmas Buddies #129

Welcome to October’s Sparkles Christmas Buddies challenge forum # 129.  Helen chose Flora or Fauna for this month’s challenge theme.   I hope you will visit the challenge blog to see all the cards by the design team.  We would love to see your creations in our gallery!

For this challenge, I created a double-z fold card using the Peaceful Places DSP (designer series paper).  You’ll only see my card here because I forgot about time differences and didn’t get my card up on the design team in a timely manner.

Here’s my card in the closed and open positions:

As soon as I saw this DSP in the current mini-catalog, I knew I just had to have it.  The grey tones are gorgeous and the silver foil specialty DSP makes everything stand out.   The only stamp set I needed to use was Perfectly Plaid because both of those beautiful sentiments are in one set.

Measurements:

  • The Basic Grey base measures 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches. In order to create the z-fold, the base gets scored at 4-1/4 inches and 2-1/8 inches. In other words, the back of the base is the same size as an A2 card. The front half of the card is folded in half.
  • The band which creates the double z-fold measures 1-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches. This piece also gets scored at 4-1/4 inches and 2-1/8 inches. However, this time, the long piece goes in the front. The folded half gets adhered to the back of the base.
  • Each of the DSP pieces for the folded front pieces measures 2 inches by 5-3/8 inches.
  • The DSP for the back panel measures 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches.
  • I used silver foil to mat the DSP on the band. This foil on the short pieces measures 1-1/4 inches by 1-7/8 inches. The foil on the long end measures 1-1/4 inches by 4-1/8 inches.
  • The long DSP panel for the front of the band measures 4 inches by 1-3/8 inches.. Then, I trimmed the DSP on the short ends to 1-3/8 inches by 1-1/8 inches.
  • I also trimmed a piece of DSP for the envelope flap to 2-1/2 inches by 6 inches.
  • I used scrap white cardstock for the front sentiment.

What I Did:

  • First, I used multipurpose liquid glue to attach each of the three panels to the base of the card.
  • Next, I adhered the silver foil and snowflake DSP to the front of the band, again using multipurpose liquid glue.
  • Then, I got to play with embossing powder and my heat tool. First, I used my embossing buddy to clean off the front of the cardstock and back panel of the DSP. I used my Stamparatus to stamp each sentiment using Versamark ink pad. Using the Stamparatus allowed me to stamp the Versamark multiple times without worrying about placement of the stamps.
  • Next, I covered both sentiments with silver embossing powder, tapped off the excess, then used my heat tool to set it. It’s beautiful, if I do say so myself.
  • After cropping the front sentiment using one of the stitched rectangle dies, I adhered it to the band with dimensionals.
  • Surprisingly, I easily made a double bow using silver thread. It’s adhered to the back of the card using multiple glue dots and a couple of dots of liquid glue.
  • Last, but definitely not least, I decided to add some bling using the subtle shimmer sequins from the same product suite as the DSP.
  • HINT: I’ve always struggled with adhering sequins, but I think I’ve finally figured it out. I put a couple of drops of liquid glue on my silicone mat. I used my opposable (or reverse) tweezers to pick up individual sequins and lightly dripped each in the liquid glue. Then I just randomly placed them on the trees and front band. If you haven’t used these tweezers before, I urge you to get them (here). They can act like a third hand and are well-worth the money.
  • After adhering and trimming the DSP to the envelope flap, I’d finished this coordinated card/envelope set.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this card.

Please stay safe and healthy.

Have a Peachy day!
