Make My Monday Challenge – At the Beach

Good morning and welcome back for another Make My Monday challenge. The new challenge calls for a beach theme. I might have to explain what I did for a beachy card, though.

Here’s my card:

While my card doesn’t contain a strict beach scene, to me the Tropical Oasis DSP very definitely conveys a Hawaiian vibe. The vintage cars with surfboards on top, the palm trees, and the colors all say BEACH to me.

Measurements:

This card turned out to be much easier than I thought it would be.

  • I trimmed Whisper White to 4-1/4 inches by 11 inches, and scored it at 5-1/2 inches. This provided me with a card base.
  • The Pretty Peacock bottom mat measures 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches.
  • I cut the Tropical Oasis DSP to 2-5/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches. Then I used the Pretty Peacock Stamping Write marker to outline the the DSP so it created a border without the extra bulk of more cardstock.
  • Since I thought that I had the coordinating die set, I took time using the Stamparatus for the palm trees. I really couldn’t have easily created all the colorful frond without the Stamparatus. In order to create the palm trees I used the Stamping Write Markers so I could add detail to the leaves.
  • For the trunks, I used the Early Espresso marker on just the trunks and stamped them. Next, I used the Old Olive marker to color the all the fronds and stamped them. In order to add color, I used the Pretty Peacock marker and randomly swiped it on the fronds part of the stamp, then stamped it.
  • This is where things got interesting. I don’t actually have the coordinating die set. However, I really wanted to use the palm trees, so I had to fussy cut them out. They came out much better than I would have thought.

Finishing Up

  • Next, I had to decide on a sentiment. The main reason I picked this one was that it fit where I needed it to be. We’ve all done that, right? I used Early Espresso to stamp it on another pattern of the Tropical DSP, which I cropped using the Rectangle Stitched dies.
  • There are dimensionals under the sentiment to pop it up. I attached the palm tree trunks to the sentiment and popped it up on dimensionals as well.
  • Before adhering the sentiment and palm trees, I wrapped Early Espresso faux suede trim and tied it in a square knot.
  • Next, I adhered the sentiment and palm trees.
  • I cut a piece of the sentiment DSP to 4-1/4 inches by 1/2 inch and adhered it to the bottom of the inside of the card.
  • Finally, I cut a pieces of the brown grass cloth DSP pattern to 6 inches by 2-1/2 inches, adhered it to the envelope flap, then trimmed it.
  • With that, I’d completed this card/envelope set.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d also love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Clean and Simple for Make My Monday challenge # 128

Hello and welcome back to another Make My Monday challenge! This challenge’s theme is clean and simple. I decided to use the Whale of a Time suite for my card.

Here’s my card:

I really don’t know what part of this suite I like the most. For this card, it’s the color combination of Just Jade and Pretty Peacock. The 3D Seabed embossing folder might carry this card. It could be the wave pattern DSP, or even the DSP whale. Yes, I said I punched the whale from the DSP from this set. There’s a whale stamp allowing you to create your own color combination. The punch also includes the adorable water piece for the water spout on top. Cute!

However, I really wanted this card to be as simple as possible. To me, that meant just three elements and the embossed background. Since I used white for the embossed background, the card remained pretty clean. Truth be told, I really think I created this following a sketch challenge, but for the life of me, I can’t remember which one.

Measurements

  • I used Just Jade for the card base, which is 4-1/4 inches by 11 inches, and scored at 5-1/2 inches.
  • The Pretty Peacock mat measures 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches. I cropped the Pretty Peacock Stitched So Sweetly label from the middle of the mat layer to save on cardstock.
  • A Stitched So Sweetly die was also used to crop the DSP wave pattern paper. I don’t really know how I decided to put both of the Stitched So Sweetly cropped layers together, but it totally works.
  • The medium square from the Stitched Shapes die set provided the perfect square for the sentiment block.
  • For the inside, I trimmed a piece of white cardstock to my standard 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches. I used the sentiment and swimming fish from the Whale Done stamp set on the inside.
  • I cut a piece of the wave DSP for the envelope flap to 2-5/8 inches by 6 inches.

Here’s the inside of the card:

Stamping and Assembly

  • I stamped both the front and inside sentiment using the Momento Tuxedo Black ink pad.
  • Aren’t those fish on the inside super cute? Hopefully, you can see the color variations on each one, which was relatively easy to achieve. I used the Just Jade marker to color the all the fish on the stamp, then went back and randomly colored the stamp using my Pretty Peacock marker. Stamp, color, repeat across the card and on the bottom. While I had the stamp and markers out, I stamped a line of fish along the bottom of the front of the envelope using the same coloring pattern.
  • Once I had all my pieces, it took very little time to assemble the card. Using the multipurpose glue, I attached the white background to the Pretty Peacock layer. Then, I attached those to the Just Jade card base.
  • I carefully lined up the two Stitched So Sweetly label die pieces and I couldn’t believe how well they fit together.
  • There’s a layer of dimensionals under the sentiment block.
  • I wanted the whale to really stand up off the card, so I used a double layer of mini-dimensionals on the back of it. The double layer means that extra postage needs to be on the card, but I think it’s worth another quarter.
  • Next, I adhered the inside white cardstock panel.
  • Finally, I added the DSP to the envelope flap then trimmed it. With that, I’d finished this coordinated card/envelope set.

I hope you will play along with our challenge! I look forward to seeing your creations in our challenge gallery!

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d also love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Baby Wipe Technique for Make My Monday #127

The theme for the MMM challenge #127 is to use the baby wipe technique. I have to admit, I haven’t done this before this challenge, so I played and had some inky fun. Literally, inky since my fingertips wound up covered with ink.

Here’s my card:

The current Sunday Stamps Challenge 235 provided the color combination for this card.

Here’s the challenge banner:

My three colors are Mossy Meadow and Pear Pizzazz for the green. Crushed Curry for yellow and Calypso Coral for the orange.

Using a Baby Wipe to Stamp

The videos I’d seen for this technique said to use a couple of drops of ink on a baby wipe. That didn’t work for me, and I used at least 6 drops each color of ink. I started with Poppy Parade, Calypso Coral, and Crushed Curry. After smooshing then stamping the blotch stamp from Painted Poppies, then stamping on white cardstock, I found that the flowers were too dark. So, I tried plan B with just Poppy Parade and Crushed Curry. This combination gave me the color variation for which I was looking.

I tried placing an outer circle of Calypso Coral ink dots, and then dropping Crushed Curry in the center of the circle. My goalwas to try getting the Crushed Curry in the middle of the flower. However, I found that tapping my stamp onto the baby wipe didn’t work well at all, and no Crushed Curry showed at all. Therefore, I tapped, tapped, tapped, then smooshed the stamp on the wipe before stamping on white cardstock. I stamped five blotches, then used the poppy outline on each blotch. Then I just needed to crop them all using the poppy dies. It’s a super easy and fun technique and resulted in a colorful mix of inks. I’ve already got other color combinations floating around in my head and can’t wait to have some more baby wipe fun.

The Layout, Directions, Measurements

For this layout, I decided to create a mock split card design.

  1. I stamped three sets of leaves from the Forever Fern stamp set in Pear Pizzazz, then cropped them using the coordinating dies.
  2. I used Mossy Meadow cardstock for the base and cut it to 4-1/4 inches by 11 inches, scored at 5-1/2 inches. This card opens up.
  3. The Calypso Coral middle mat measures 4-1/8 inches by 5-5/8 inches. In an effort to save on cardstock, I did crop the center using the second largest stitched rectangle die.
  4. I didn’t trim the white cardstock until after I ran it through the Big Shot using the Brick and Mortar 3D embossing folder. This layer measures 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches.
  5. I used multipurpose glue to attached the bottom two layers.
  6. Next, I wrapped a length of Calypso Coral ribbon around the white cardstock and tied it in a simple square knot on the right side of the cardstock.
  7. There are dimensionals under the leaves and the flowers and adhered them to the left side of the card.
  8. The sentiment is also from Forever Fern and is stamped in Mossy Meadow. I cropped the sentiment using the stitched rectangle die and popped it up on dimensionals.
  9. Once I had adhered the sentiment, I attached the top white layer to the bottom two layers.

Inside and Finishing Touches

Since the card base is Mossy Meadow, I needed to trim white cardstock to 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches for the inside. I didn’t stamp a sentiment on the inside of the card, which left plenty of space for a note.

I cut a piece of Calypso Coral 6×6″ DSP to 6 inches by 2-5/8 inches to adhere to the envelope flap. While I was at it, I trimmed a 3/8″ by 5-1/4″ strip of the same Calypso Coral DSP.

With that, I’d finished this card/envelope set. Ta-Da!

I truly hop you try this technique and try it out soon! Please join us for this challenge, and I look forward to seeing your creations in our gallery!

Stars and Stripes for Make My Monday #126

Welcome to another Make My Monday challenge! Since we celebrated the 4th of July on Saturday, my choice for today’s challenge theme was Stars and Stripes. As you can see from the cards from the other design team members, this theme allows for a wide variety of interpretations!

Here’s my card:

This card wound up being created strictly with what I had on hand. I am trying to use up my 2019 6 x 6 inch DSP before ordering the 2020 packs. The Real Red ribbon is also last year’s, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the new red ribbon. The punch for the stars is long retired, but it rarely used so I keep it around.

Sticking with the Theme

I may be partial, but I think that red, white, and blue just happens to be a very classic color combination. Stampin’ Up! offers such a wide variety of reds and blues. Therefore, any one of them would have fit the bill for my card. However, I chose Night of Navy and Real Red because I wanted a bold statement for this celebration card.

To create the stripes of navy, I used one sheet of the Night of Navy 6 x 6 inch DSP. As it worked out, these two patterns are on the front and back of each other.

My strips are 5-3/8 inches long. The widths for the wider end fall between 6/8 to 7/8 of an inch. The thinner end widths each are about 1/2 inch. This stripe pattern is very popular right now, and is great to create a card from scraps.

I used Real Red for the base of the card, which I cut to 8-1/2 inches by 11 inches, scored at 4-1/4 inches. I wanted the navy stripes to pop off the base color, so I used a piece of white cardstock cut to 4-1/8 by 5-3/8 inches. There is a very thin strip of white showing on either side of the navy stripes. The navy stripes are also 5-3/8 inches long. When I tried having the stripes a tad shorter than the white, the whole card looked off.

Finishing Up

The sentiment on the stamp actually says “Let’s celebrate you”. I wanted this card to be able to be used for any kind of celebration. Since I wanted to use white embossing powder for the sentiment, I needed to make sure the powder would stick only where I wanted it. That’s easily accomplished by rubbing the embossing buddy on the cardstock before any ink touches it.

I used my Stamp-aratus to align and stamp the sentiment. This fabulous tool allowed me to mask off the “you”, and stamp the sentiment with VersaMark multiple times. I used a Post-It note for the mask. After heatsetting the powder, I cropped the sentiment using the Stitched Rectangle die. As a reminder, don’t forget to take the mask OFF before you stamp it on the cardstock. That wasn’t an issue this time, but it has been in the past. It makes a complete mess, and it’s not pretty at all.

I needed something to anchor the sentiment, so I used Real Red ribbon tied in a small square knot. The sentiment rectangle easily fits in place. I used dimensionals on the rectangle to pop it up.

It probably would have been easier to run some white cardstock through my Big Shot in the subtles folder before I punched stars. Well, there’s no “probably” because it definitely would’ve been easier.

Finding the completely random placement of the stars was left strictly up to chance. I actually picked up five stars and shook them in my hand for a second or two. Then, I closed my eyes and dropped them on the card. Wherever they landed is where they stayed. Strange, I know. I glued one star directly to the sentiment block, and another is glued right by it on the DSP. I used mini-dimensionals for the other three stars.

Inside, then Done

In order to keep this card as an all ocassion card, I left the inside white cardstock plain. There is a 1/2 inch piece of navy DSP as a border on the right side of the 4 x 5-1/4 inch white cardstock.

After adhering another piece of the 6 x 6 inch DSP to the flap of the envelope, I’d completed this card/envelope set.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d also love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Make My Monday #125 and ctd598 – Two Cards, Circle Stencils

Welcome to the Make My Monday challenge # 125, which is all about using stencils. Until very recently, I didn’t even realize that I only have the hearts and stars Stampin’ Up! stencils, which retired a few years ago. The stars stencil would have been very helpful when trying to create this card for the InKing Royalty blog hop last week. Anyway, I really struggled with a stencil card and have two of the four cards I started ready to share with you today.

Make My Monday Challenge #125

Here’s my card:

This challenge requires stencils. After creating the ctd#598 card described below, I again used the negative space from the largest circle die in the Layering Circles die set. This time, I sponged the inner part of the circle using Pear Pizazz. When I started dry-fitting the cropped pieces over the sponged circle, I decided that I needed more stenciled images. Therefore, I used the negative space around the Forever Fern leave dies. So, I sponged a Pretty Peacock and Shaded Spruce leaves in three places around the circle.

While I was dry-fitting pieces, I realized the card needed ribbon. Therefore, I added the Mint Macaron ribbon around the center of the card, and all the layers went under that ribbon. I used my Xyron to get adhesive on the back of the vellum leaves cropped from the same die set. Looking back, I probably shouldn’t have done that. Looking back, I also decided that I probably should have added texture to the white cardstock. Then, I just needed to add the various layers and the sentiment.

I left the inside blank so a personalized note could be written on the inside. Finally, I added a piece of the Forever Greenery DSP to the envelope flap, which finished off this card/envelope set.

Color Throwdown challenge # 598

The colors for the Color Throwdown challenge #598 includes white, gold, pink, and aqua. I used these colors with the negative part of three sizes of circle punches.

Here’s that card:

Although I later realized I didn’t need to, I first masked off the center of the front of the card. Since I decided to add a strip of Whisper White to the middle of the card I really didn’t need to mask it off, but it helped figuring out the stenciling of the negative circle spaces.

What I Did:

After masking the center, I used the three negative circle stencils and sponges to sponge in a variety of circle sizes using Magenta Madness, Balmy Blue and the Delicata Gold ink pad. Sponging the gold required many layers of sponging just to get the circles I have on the card. Then, I stamped another circle of gold on a piece of scrap white and stamped it with the heart balloon stamp from the Special Someone stamp set.

Next, I stamped the raccoon and balloon string in Momento Tuxedo black on more scraps of white cardstock. Using the Special Day dies, I cropped the raccoon, heart balloon, and string pieces.

The next thing I did was to crop two pieces of Balmy Blue 6 x 6 DSP for the grass. The first piece is adhered directly onto the middle white section piece of cardstock. Then I adhered the raccoon to the first piece of DSP and added dimensionals to the second piece of grass. The dimensionals allowed me to pop up the second piece of grass so it appears that the raccoon is standing in the grass.

A mini-dimensional pops up the heart balloon. Next, I adhered the string to the raccoon and the balloon using liquid adhesive.

I used the Special Someone stamp set for the sentiments on the front of the card. Then, I layered the card front on the same Balmy Blue DSP, and used Magenta Madness for the bottom mat.

The Inside

The card base is white, as is the mat layer I trimmed for the inside. In order to create some border between the two layers of white, I used the Magenta Madness marker to outline the inside layer of white. I also stamped the raccoon on the inside with sentiments from the Sending You Thoughts stamp set.

After stamping the raccoon on the front bottom corner of the envelope, I adhered a piece of the Balmy Blue DSP to the flap. With that, I’d completed this card and envelope set.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d also love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

A Cute Baby Card for Make My Monday #123

I’ve been wanting to create a black, white, and yellow card for a couple of weeks. However, I’ve gotten side-tracked with other ideas and challenges and kept putting off a card with this color combo. That is, until this challenge when everything came together in my head.

Sweetest Baby

I just love this stamp set for baby cards! It’s already obvious that I love fun fold cards, so this card just seemed like the perfect combination.

Here’s my card:

I’ve used a similar fun fold before, and you can see that card here. This one is less detailed, but adorable for a baby card. I saw this card on posted on Pinterest by Courtenay Heuston.

So Saffron seemes like a pastel yellow that would work well for a baby card. The So Saffron gingham DSP pattern really works for this card. I used the (now retired) Golden Honey striped DSP for this card, but any contrasting DSP would work as well.

Wildly Happy

I could have used one of the four adorable mother/baby stamps from the set, but thought the panda pair would coordinate well with my color combination. This pair could have been colored, but I like how light the card looks without coloring. I’ve thought about coloring them, but really feel the resulting focal image would be too heavy.

The Wild About You stamp set also contains the sweet sentiment I used on the front and inside. One of my most used die sets, Stitched Rectangle dies, allowed me to crop both rectangles on the front. The stitched borders really add a finished look to the card. I couldn’t resist adding the adorable bees from Welcome Easter. The cuties also run across the bottom of the front of the coordinating envelope.

Since I used dimensionals on the panda panel, I could wrap the black ribbon around it. A cute little square knot would be perfect. However, I soon learned that the square knot wouldn’t work on the left side of the pandas. It would get in the way of using the sentiment as a way to keep the panda panel closed if I left it on the left side.

Putting It All Together

The measurements for the card bases below are in inches:

Card base – 5.5″ by 7″, scored at 4″.

Flip open panel – 6″ x 4″, scored at the 3″ mark leaving a 3″ x 4″ flip open mini card.

Margins are personal preferences based on your card layout.

If you want the mini-card to stay closed, the front sentiment does need to be either on the top or bottom left hand corner. I used dimensionals on three of the corners of the sentiment block. In order to allow the mini-card to tuck under the sentiment, make sure to leave the fourth corner free.

As Always, Thank You for Visiting!

I love to read and reply to comments. If you are so inclined, please feel free to leave a comment. If you’ve created a card based off this fun fold, color combination, or bundle, I’d love to see what you created!

Have a Peachy Day!
