A Shadowbox Frame Baby Card

Debbie Mageed is a fellow demonstrator in the Mary Fish’s team of Pals and has started a Creative Creases Challenge. The current one runs through Thursday, April 29. She created an adorable shadowbox frame card using the Snail Mail suite of products.

Here’s her inspiration card and the challenge icon:

My step-daughter and her husband just welcomed a baby boy to their family. I waited to find out whether the baby was a boy or girl before I made a card, so this is what I created:

I used the retired Twinkle, Twinkle DSP, the current Stitched So Sweetly die set, and Kangaroo and Company bundle.

Debbie’s blog post included a link to a tutorial video by Dawn Griffith. When I followed the link, I found a plethora of shadowbox frame card tutorials. I picked this video, mainly because I liked the flowers. This fun fold card is truly one of the least complicated fun folds ever! Just don’t tell the recipient because they will think you created something that took a long time to create.

What I Did:

  • Dawn’s directions are super easy to follow! I started with two pieces of the Twinkle, Twinkle DSP trimmed to 4-1/4 by 5-1/2 inches. Just follow her directions for the scoring, and you will have the two main pieces for the card finished in minutes. Just don’t adhere them together until you’ve finished adhering everything inside the shadowbox.
  • I used the Stitched So Sweetly die to crop out the center shadowbox frame.
  • Then, I used the same die to crop a piece of coordinating Twinkle, Twinkle DSP for the inside/back of the frame.
  • Next, I used the same die and the next largest die to create a frame for the outside in Soft Sea Foam cardstock. I very carefully lined up and then adhered the frame to the front of the cut-out.
  • The tiny sentiment also comes from the Kangaroo and Company stamp set. I stamped it using the Momento Tuxedo Black ink and cropped it from another die in the Stitched So Sweetly set.
  • The mat for the sentiment is yet another die from the set. I cropped it from a scrap piece of Soft Sea Foam DSP.

Time for the Star of the Card: the Mom and Baby Kangaroo

  • I stamped both the mom and baby in Momento Tuxedo Black. I colored them with the Gray Granite blends combo and the dark Petal Pink blend.
  • Then I just cropped them using the coordinating die set. What’s so perfect about the mother die is that a line will be cut across the top of the pouch at the same time.
  • Since I didn’t want the baby to just lay flat on the mom, I only used a dimensional on the bottom of the baby on the back of the mom. Actually, I used dimensionals to pop up the whole mom/baby combo.
  • At this point, I thought I had finished the card, but knew I needed something else to make it complete. I snapped a shot of the card and sent it to a friend asking for help. She suggested a moon, so that’s what I did. I created the moon using the 1 inch circle punch. I punched out a circle, put a post-it on the circle so I could line it up again. The second punch created the crescent moon I needed.
  • Of course, a moon needs to sparkle, so I used the clear Wink of Stella pen to bling it up. Then I decided to step the Soft Sea Foam frame up a notch. Since I’d already adhered the frame, I very carefully applied Wink of Stella to that.
  • Finally, I’d completed the card. I trimmed a piece of DSP to 6 inches by 2-1/2 inches, adhered it to the envelope flap and trimmed it down. After running the coordinating DSP punched circle through the XYRON create-a-sticker for the envelope seal, I had finished the whole coordinated set.

Thank you so much for stopping by today. I hope you will pop over to Debbie’s blog and join in the Creative Creases challenge!

I’d love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Daisies, Try Stampin on Tuesday #470 Challenge, and Blog Candy

While commenting on cards uploaded to the Make My Monday challenge # 128, I came across a new to me challenge, Try Stampin on Tuesday. The current challenge inspired me to create this card:

Here’s the challenge banner:

I happily combined Flowers for Every Season DSP, the Ornate Garden 3D embossing folder, and the Lovely You stamp set to create this card.

Flowers for Every Season

  • I used Just Jade for the card base cut to 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches, scored at 4-1/4 inches.
  • Using the Ornate Garden 3D embossing folder, I ran some white cardstock through my Big Shot. Then, I trimmed the cardstock to 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches.
  • Next, I trimmed another piece of white cardstock to 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches for the inside of the card.
  • I trimmed the daisy piece of DSP to 3-3/8 inches by 3 inches. While I had that DSP out, I also trimmed a piece of the daisy DSP to 2-1/2 inches by 6 inches for the envelope flap. There is also a piece of this DSP on the bottom of the inside of the card. I trimmed that piece to1/4 inch by 5-1/4 inches.
  • Thankfully, I had some scrap cinnamon DSP from the Flowers DSP. I trimmed my scrap to two pieces measuring 3 inches high and 1/2 inch wide. I simply used multipurpose liquid adhesive to attach one to each side of the daisies. Then I put dimensionals under this combined piece.
  • I also already had the Stitched So Sweetly label. Since I really, really like the script font in the Lovely You stamp set, I used one of those sentiments. I almost did a happy dance when I found a sentiment that would fit on the part of the label I wanted to use. The label is cut in half, and then I put dimensionals under it as well.
  • Before I put everything together, I wrapped a piece of the Just Jade ribbon and tied it in a square knot.
  • Since I got everything together at once, I was able to quickly put the card and envelope together. With that, I’d finished this card/envelope set.

BLOG CANDY!

I know that you have many, many options for blogs written by Stampin’ Up! demonstrators. I also know that many of those demonstrators have thousands and thousands of followers. In late January/early February I had decided to spread my wings and start building a business side. I had gotten a few leads and was planning card workshops for these leads. Then, March happened, and 2020 just keeps getting more interesting.

As such, I greatly appreciate every, single follower. I now have just under 100 followers. I would really love to get into triple digits for followers.

Enter a Blog Candy Opportunity!

When (positive thinking is everything) I reach 100 followers, I will use an online random number generator to pick a BLOG CANDY WINNER! Since it’s completely random, every follower is eligible to be a winner!

Clean and Simple for Make My Monday challenge # 128

Hello and welcome back to another Make My Monday challenge! This challenge’s theme is clean and simple. I decided to use the Whale of a Time suite for my card.

Here’s my card:

I really don’t know what part of this suite I like the most. For this card, it’s the color combination of Just Jade and Pretty Peacock. The 3D Seabed embossing folder might carry this card. It could be the wave pattern DSP, or even the DSP whale. Yes, I said I punched the whale from the DSP from this set. There’s a whale stamp allowing you to create your own color combination. The punch also includes the adorable water piece for the water spout on top. Cute!

However, I really wanted this card to be as simple as possible. To me, that meant just three elements and the embossed background. Since I used white for the embossed background, the card remained pretty clean. Truth be told, I really think I created this following a sketch challenge, but for the life of me, I can’t remember which one.

Measurements

  • I used Just Jade for the card base, which is 4-1/4 inches by 11 inches, and scored at 5-1/2 inches.
  • The Pretty Peacock mat measures 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches. I cropped the Pretty Peacock Stitched So Sweetly label from the middle of the mat layer to save on cardstock.
  • A Stitched So Sweetly die was also used to crop the DSP wave pattern paper. I don’t really know how I decided to put both of the Stitched So Sweetly cropped layers together, but it totally works.
  • The medium square from the Stitched Shapes die set provided the perfect square for the sentiment block.
  • For the inside, I trimmed a piece of white cardstock to my standard 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches. I used the sentiment and swimming fish from the Whale Done stamp set on the inside.
  • I cut a piece of the wave DSP for the envelope flap to 2-5/8 inches by 6 inches.

Here’s the inside of the card:

Stamping and Assembly

  • I stamped both the front and inside sentiment using the Momento Tuxedo Black ink pad.
  • Aren’t those fish on the inside super cute? Hopefully, you can see the color variations on each one, which was relatively easy to achieve. I used the Just Jade marker to color the all the fish on the stamp, then went back and randomly colored the stamp using my Pretty Peacock marker. Stamp, color, repeat across the card and on the bottom. While I had the stamp and markers out, I stamped a line of fish along the bottom of the front of the envelope using the same coloring pattern.
  • Once I had all my pieces, it took very little time to assemble the card. Using the multipurpose glue, I attached the white background to the Pretty Peacock layer. Then, I attached those to the Just Jade card base.
  • I carefully lined up the two Stitched So Sweetly label die pieces and I couldn’t believe how well they fit together.
  • There’s a layer of dimensionals under the sentiment block.
  • I wanted the whale to really stand up off the card, so I used a double layer of mini-dimensionals on the back of it. The double layer means that extra postage needs to be on the card, but I think it’s worth another quarter.
  • Next, I adhered the inside white cardstock panel.
  • Finally, I added the DSP to the envelope flap then trimmed it. With that, I’d finished this coordinated card/envelope set.

I hope you will play along with our challenge! I look forward to seeing your creations in our challenge gallery!

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d also love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

One Card, Three Challenges!

I don’t think I’ve been able to combine three challenges into one card before. However, for this card, I combined the Global Design Project 251, Freshly Made Sketches 446, and Sunday Stamps Challenge 236. Wow! The #GDP251 challenge required an aquatic theme. FMS446 wanted a slimline card, and SSC236 is a sketch challenge.

Here’s my card:

Here are the challenge banners:

Measurements:

  • The Granny Apple Green base is 7 inches by 8-1/2 inches, scored vertically at 3-1/2 inches.
  • For the front of the card, I trimmed white cardstock to 3-3/8 inches by 8-3/8 inches. I also trimmed a piece of white cardstock to 3-1/4 inches by 8-1/4 inches for the inside.
  • Since the Whale of a Time DSP measures 6 inches by 6 inches, I had to very carefully combine two pieces of DSP. I used two of the Pacific Point wave patterns for the front. I left the waves on the bottom, and combined the darker piece to the top. The final measurement for this DSP combination came out to 3-1/4 inches by 8-1/4 inches.
  • The Bumblebee DSP measures 1-1/4 inches wide by 3 inches long. Since the middle will be covered, I didn’t need to use long strips of this DSP.
  • After embossing a piece of 4-1/4 inches by 5-1/2 inches piece of white cardstock with the Seabed 3D embossing folder, I trimmed it to 3-7/8 inches by 5-1/4 inches.
  • I trimmed the turtle DSP to 2-3/8 inches by 6 inches. Dimensionals provide the popped up height.

Assembly:

  • Once I had all my pieces trimmed, I settled on the sentiment. Using the Momento Tuxedo Black ink, I stamped the sentiment on a scrap piece of white cardstock, then cropped it using a stitched rectangle die.
  • I used a piece of the Granny Apple Green DSP from the Whale of a Time set and cropped it using the Stitched So Sweetly dies. The sentiment is adhered directly to the DSP using the multipurpose liquid glue, and there are dimensionals under the DSP.
  • Since I’d already cut all the pieces I needed, I just needed to start at the bottom and put the card together following the Sunday Stamps sketch. It took me longer to measure and cut all the pieces than it did to assemble the card.
The Inside:
  • I wanted to make this a birthday card, so I used the “Hoping all your birthday fishes come true” on the inside. I guess I didn’t think too much about it, but I decided to stamp turtles on the inside to match the front of the card instead of fish to match the sentiment. In the long run, I don’t think anyone will notice other than you and me.
  • For some reason, I really struggled with this turtle stamp. When I tried to stamp it fresh off the ink pad, I wound up with blobs. Thankfully, I started my test stamps on my grid paper. I decided to use Just Jade and Pacific Point ink and stamped all of the turtles second generation on the white cardstock.
  • Finally, I stamped some air bubbles using Pool Party.
  • Here’s the inside of the card:
  • With that, I’d finished my slimline, three challenge card. I still have to make an envelope to go with it, but am hoping it will fit in a legal size envelope.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d also love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

#GDP250 and ctd603 Two-fer with a Split Card

It’s true, another Forever Fern card for this two-fer. The Color Throwdown #603 challenge calls for green, orange, and yellow. I used Garden Green, Pumpkin Pie, and Daffodil Delight. When paired with the Global Design Project #250 sketch challenge the colors create a completely different look to the Forever Fern stamps. Since I used the split card technique, I have a mirror image card I can use another day in another way.

Here’s my card:

Here are the challenge banners:

This technique is one of the easiest ways to get two cards out of one stamping time. Start with 1/2 sheet of cardstock, in this case I used white cardstock cut to 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches. I very, very lightly scored this piece at 4-1/4 inches just enough to see the exact middle of the cardstock. Then, I started stamping. When you get a design with which you are happy, simply cut on the 4-1/4 inch line. Ta-da! Two card fronts. I keep my other half of the card front in the back sleeve on the stamp set.

I took the picture on the left after I trimmed the piece on the right for the card front, which explains why the green leaves are off. The picture on the right shows how snug the other half of the card fits in the back sleeve of the stamp case.

Split Card Technique: Measurements

The Garden Green card base measures 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches, scored at 4-1/4 inches.

I used a piece of the 2020 Garden Green 6 x 6 DSP for the background of the card. This piece measures 4-1/4 inches by 5-1/2 inches. When picking the DSP patterns for both the green and orange mats, I decided I needed very subtle patterns so they wouldn’t clash with the Forever Fern stamped images.

While I originally thought I’d use Daffodil Delight DSP for the tilted DSP mat, I ended up using Pumpkin Pie. I wanted that tilted mat to pop off the green background mat, and the Pumpkin Pie did that much more than the yellow. The Pumpkin Pie DSP is cut to 4-7/8 inches by 3-7/8 inches.

Finally, I trimmed the white stamped cardstock to 4-78 inches by 3-7/8 inches for the outside. I also cut a piece of white for the inside of the card to 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches.

While I was using the paper trimmer, I cut a piece of the Pumpkin Pie DSP to 6 inches by 2-5/8 inches for the envelope flap.

Split Card Technique: Directions

I wanted the green for the largest stamp because the leaves spread out, but the dark color would be prominent. Daffodil Delight was used on the seven leaf stamp. I used Pumpkin Pie for the round berries/cotton pod looking stamp.

  • Starting with the green stamp, I alternated stamping it on the right and left of my center line score. I thought it was easier to work from the bottom up along the center line. I added the all the stamps along the bottom after I’d stamped everything else.
  • Next, I stamped the yellow leaves. I really tried to fill in-between the green sprays of leaves going up and out from the center line.
  • Then, I stamped the Pumpkin Pie round pods. Once again, I tried to have them go up the center, but also spray in towards the center of the cardstock.
  • Finally, I went back and filled in the stamps along the bottom of the card so they would all surround the sentiment.
  • I wanted to have one of each color stamp on the front, bottom left corner of the envelope, so I stamped that while I had the stamps and ink pads out.
  • The white inside panel has one of each of the colored stamps in the bottom right-hand corner.
  • I used the large THANK YOU from the Ornate Thanks stamp set for the sentiment. Using my Stamparatus made masking and placing the two parts of the stamp much, much easier.
  • The inside sentiment, from the bottom of my heart, also from Ornate Thanks, is stamped in the middle of the white cardstock inside panel.
Cropping and Assembly
  • I cropped the sentiment panel using a rectangle stitched die. Just like the sentiment, I played around with the size of the die but didn’t take pictures as I did it. Explaining the easy process in writing really needs accompanying pictures. Next time I’ll remember. I put dimensionals under the sentiment panel.
  • The bold sentiment and colors needed a bold mat. I used a Stitched So Sweetly die and cropped it from the Garden Green DSP. It was a stroke of genius luck that the cropped sentiment rectangle fit perfectly on the rectangle of the mat. I also put dimensionals under the mat.
  • Just a note: I cropped the Stitched So Sweetly mat from the DSP I used for the background of the card. Since no one can see the whole center section of that DSP, there’s no reason not to use it for the sentiment mat.
  • Finally, I assembled all the elements of the card using the multipurpose liquid adhesive for the mats and layers. Even with a double layer of dimensionals on the sentiment, it will still fit in a medium SU! envelope for the standard amount of postage.
  • After adhering and trimming the DSP to the envelope flap, I had completed this coordinated card/envelope set.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d also love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.
