Cardz 4 Guyz #275 = Keys

Welcome to another Cardz 4 Guyz challenge! Deb chose “keys” for the theme for #275. I hope you will pop over to the C4G blog to see what the rest of the design team created as well!

Here’s my card:

I’ll admit, this theme had me stumped for a bit. I do not have anything with a key as a stamp or embellishment. Therefore, I did what any good crafter does when stumped: go to Pinterest! I saw a number of nautical themed cards with keys as embellishments and thought I could do something with that. Thankfully, Michaels had small keys in the jewelry section, so I grabbed them. I used products from the Sailing Home line of Stampin’ Up! products.

Measurements:

After I bought the keys, the rest of the card fell into place quite rapidly.

  • The Night of Navy base measures 8-1/2 inches by 5-1/2 inches, scored at 4-1/4 inches.
  • I used a Crumb Cake mat trimmed to 5-3/8 inches by 4-1/8 inches.
  • The Sailing Home DSP (designer series paper) measures 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches. While I was trimming that, I also trimmed a piece to 6 inches by 2-1/2 inches for the envelope flap. I adhered it to the flap immediately so I wouldn’t misplace it while I was working on the card.
  • Next, I used scraps of white cardstock to stamp both the anchor and the sentiment.
  • I already had the nautical steering wheel cropped using the Smooth Sailing dies, from which I also cropped the anchor. Once again, I used the stitched rectangle dies to crop out the sentiment.
  • The white cardstock for the inside of the card measures 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches, as always.

Thoughts and Assembly:

  • The DSP appears to almost be distressed, but I thought I could add to it to make it stand out against the Crumb Cake mat. Therefore, I used the brush end of my Early Espresso marker and outlined the piece of DSP. As you can see, I wasn’t too careful and the corners have a bit more distressing than the rest of the DSP. However, since the print on the DSP uses Early Espresso, everything blends in for one cohesive look.
  • While I had my marker out, I also used it to distress the white cardstock for the inside panel.
  • That’s just one of the great things about using Stampin’ Up! products: all the color products match perfectly creating a seamless end product.
  • I really wanted the embellishments to be clean and un-distressed since the keys are shiny. So, I didn’t distress anything else on the front of the card.
  • After dry-fitting all the pieces on the DSP, I used multipurpose glue to adhere the steering wheel. Then, I used dimensionals under the anchor and sentiment.
  • The bakers’ twine also comes from the Sailing Home products. I wrapped it around the DSP three times and tied it in a knot on the front. While the keys may look like they are attached to the twine, I actually used glue dots to keep them in place.
  • In order to compensate for the bulk of the twine, I popped the DSP up on dimensionals before adhering it to the Crumb Cake cardstock.

I Thought I was Done, but I was Wrong.

  • After I adhered the front of the card to the Night of Navy base, I thought I had finished the card. However, something just kept bugging me. After a few hours, it dawned on me – I’d used an even number of items on the front of the card. The steering wheel, anchor, twine, two keys, and the sentiment. I grabbed my last steering wheel sailing trinket and used a glue dot to attach it.
  • I didn’t stamp anything on the inside of the card because I wanted to be able to use it as an all occasion thank you card.
  • With the addition of the steering wheel trinket, I could call this card/envelope/seal coordinated set complete.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog today!

I’d love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Cardz 4 Guyz #257: Birthday for an Adult Guy

Welcome to C4G # 257, which is to create a birthday card for an adult guy. I do have some stamp sets that will work for both male and female birthdays, depending on the design. For this challenge, I chose the Sailing Home cling stamp set and the coordinating Smooth Sailing die set.

I really wanted to also create a fun fold card. Recently, I’ve seen a number of cards with side panels and the middle opens up. Mary Deatherage, of Stamps-n-Lingers, has a video on this fun fold with a twist. She made an easel card out of the center. You can see that video here. I’ve gotten my camera stand, and have made a few test videos, but need to get better before I post one of them. Anyway, Mary’s video explains how to create the whole card. I really enjoy her videos and Facebook Live videos.

Here’s my card:

Here’s the outside of the card:

Now for the back of the card:

Stamps, Colors, and Dies. Oh my!

  • The card base is a piece of Seaside Spray trimmed to 8-1/2 inches by 5-1/2 inches, scored at 4-1/4 inches to create a tent card.
  • I really wanted to use DSP to mimic ocean waves. The picture I had in my head was a clean and simple card. Therefore, I didn’t want to stamp the whole front of the card. I thought the woodgrain pattern in Seaside Spray would give me the movement and white color intertwined with each other.
  • Next, I used Misty Moonlight to mat the Seaside Spray DSP.
  • The outside sentiment and the boat are from the Sailing Home stamp set, as are the lighthouse and the anchor.
  • I used the birthday sentiments, for the front and back, from Peaceful Moments and stamped it in Night of Navy as well. The stitched sentiment label is from the Sailing Home die set.
  • I stamped all of the elements in Night of Navy and then cropped them. I knew that I wanted to have the very front sentiment circle, cropped using the Stitched Shapes die, hanging off the side of the center panel. In order to have a finished look on the back, I cropped another circle from the Misty Moonlight 6″ x 6″ DSP and glued it on the back.
  • Since I put the lighthouse on the left panel, I needed something on the right side. Therefore, I cropped the underwater plants from a piece of Night of Navy wood grain DSP.
  • I finally settled on using the rope die for the piece that holds up the easel. I cropped it from a scrap piece of the distressed Night of Navy 6″ x 6″ DSP. Next, I cropped a piece of an adhesive sheet using the same rope die. After I cropped it, I pulled off one side of the cover of the adhesive sheet. This things are very, very sticky so be careful when using them. However, this adhesive sheet made it so much easier to get the whole rope piece adhered at once. Easy peasy.
  • I really wanted to use DSP to mimic ocean waves. The picture I had in my head was a clean and simple card. Therefore, I didn’t want to stamp the whole front of the card. I thought the woodgrain pattern in Seaside Spray would give me the movement and white color intertwined with each other.

Finishing Up

After I adhered a piece of the woodgrain Night of Navy DSP for the envelope flap, I had finished this card and envelope card set.

Sailing Home with Fab Friday 169

Sailing Home

Each product in the Sailing Home suite works together to create stunning nautical cards for unisex cards.  I used just a few pieces of the dies, two pieces of DSP, the Crumb Cake and Night of Navy baker’s twine, Night of Navy and Crumb Cake cardstock, some ink, and a Sailing Home trinket for the FabFri169 challenge.  This clean and simple card came together very quickly, and would be easily replicated for mass production.

Here’s the challenge banner from Fab Friday:

This simple sketch lends itself to a multitude of interpretations.  Here’s the card I created:

A Simple Process

Night of Navy cardstock provides the base, with the first pattern of DSP for the background.  I used the Layering Circle die set to crop the compass from another piece of DSP.  I especially like the size of the DSP compasses, which really worked for this sketch challenge.

Crumb Cake cardstock provided the base of the lighthouse.  I stamped it with Night of Navy ink and cropped using the lighthouse die.  I also used Night of Navy ink for the sentiment.  This sentiment fits perfectly in the banner from Smooth Sailing dies.   In order to add some depth to the sentiment banner, I outlined it using an Early Espressso marker.  I still thought the sentiment needed additional dimension to stand out, so I used a Crumb Cake marker to color in the stitches in the ditch.

After adhering the DSP compass where I wanted it, I wrapped the baker’s twine around the base of the card three times and tied it in a square knot.  Then I pulled a small length of the nylon thread which allowed me to attach the trinket to the square knot in the baker’s twine.  The lighthouse and sentiment are popped up on dimensionals, as is the base to accomodate the baker’s twine.

Once again, I finished by decorating the envelope by stamping a lighthouse on the front left, and added more of the compass DSP on the flap.
