Clean and Simple Two-fer for PPC427 & PP542

Welcome to my one card for two challenges! The Paper Craft Crew #427 calls for a clean and simple card with a minimum of layers. The Paper Players #542 provided the sketch for my two-fer card.

Here’s my card:

Let me say here that creating this card took as about as much time as it did to figure out how to get the banners and links to show up. When did that get so difficult?

#simplestamping

#simplestamping kind of doesn’t fit this card because there isn’t any stamping involved. Literally. I used some Snail Mail DSP, the Snail Dies, 6 mini-dimensionals, white cardstock, the Bark 3D embossing folder, 3 glue dots, and some multipurpose glue.

Confession time: I really had a hard time looking at the plain envelope on the front of the card. Therefore, I went back and add a little, tiny red resin heart to the seam of the flaps. I just had to do it. It’s not noticeable, really. However, in keeping with the clean and simple theme, I didn’t take another picture.

What I Did:

  • The base of the card is white cardstock. I trimmed it to 4-1/4 inches by 11 inches, scored at 5-1/2 inches to create a tent card.
  • The embossed layer originally measured 4-1/4 by 5-1/2 inches. After I ran it through the bark embossing folder, I trimmed it to 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches.
  • The bottom piece of Bermuda Bay DSP measures 1-1/2 inches by 4-1/8 inches. While I had the DSP out, I trimmed a piece to 6 inches by 2-1/2 inches for the envelope flap. Then I adhered the DSP to the flap and fussy cut it down.
  • The hearts DSP also comes from Snail Mail, as does the adorable snail and the cute little bubble greeting. I used three of the dies from the snail dies set to crop out these shapes.
  • I used two glue dots to seal down the little envelope flaps and one glue dot to secure the snail inside the envelope.
  • There’s multipurpose glue on the bottom part of the envelope to adhere to the Bermuda Bay DSP. There are 3 mini-dimensionals behind the top part so it would lay flat.
  • There are three dimensionals behind the cute little bubble sentiment.
  • Finally, I used multipurpose adhesive to adhere the card front to the base. I could’ve used dimensionals, but I really needed to give the appearance of one layer for the base.
  • That’s it. Truly! Done! I wanted to put a piece of ribbon where the DSP ended under the snail/envelope but I held myself back from doing so.

Forever Fern for Fab Friday # 194

The biweekly Fab Friday challenges really hold a special place in my heart. About four summers ago, one of my cards recieved an honorable mention from Fab Friday. I felt so honored, and kept the card I’d created. If you’ve used Stampin’ Up! products for a few years, I think you will remember the Party Panda stamp set and the Pick-a-Pattern DSP. I paired those two products for a clean card and am still just tickled when I think about it, or look at the card. So, I try to play along with as many Fab Friday challenges as possible, and this one is no different.

The four colors in the FabFri194 challenge are Bermuda Bay, Daffodil Delight, Pumpkin Pie, and Poppy Parade. What a fun color combination! I decided to create two different cards: the first could very well be considered a #simplestamping card. When my DH saw the card, he said the card looked very simple, which made me happy because it meant I succeeded.

When I created the second card, I did a lot more stamping, and added other embellishments to create a bigger statement with my card. However, I still had quite a lot of white space on the card.

Here are my cards:

Here’s the challenge banner:

I chose Forever Fern mainly because I thought the different stamps would create a pretty unique split card technique.

Similarities

  • Both cards have a Pumpkin Pie base measuring 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches, scored at 4-1/4. Use your bone folder to go over the fold created.
  • The white cardstock is the background for each card. The #simplestamping card measures 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches. The not-so-simple card measures 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches.
  • OPTIONAL: After stamping the front of the #simplestamping card, I decided it needed something. Therefore, I used the scoring blade on my paper trimmer and made three vertical score lines down the left side of the card. I scored at 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, and 1 inch. You can score wherever you like, but I would recommend the last score line stay at 1 inch for the balance of the card. I scored after I finished my stamping so the score lines are subtle. If you want more noticeable vertical lines, score before you stamp. This will create the empty spaces as shown on a scrap sample below:
  • I used the same colors for the different stamps on both complete cards I created. The colors on the left in the scoring samples reflects the color/stamp combination I used. However, you can use whatever colors float your boat, so to speak.
  • The inside of both cards have more of the quad of colors stamped on the left and bottom. However, the #simplestamping card inside is simpler as well.
  • I used the same stamp set, Peaceful Moments, for all the sentiments, both of which are popped up on dimensionals.
  • In addition to stamping the card fronts, I also stamped the bottom, left-hand corners of both envelopes and across the envelope flaps.

Differences

  • I added a Bermuda Bay mat to the not-so-simple mat. It measures 5-3/8 inches by 4-1/8 inches.
  • Obviously, I stamped more on the not-so-simple card. Since I wanted the bold sentiment block kind of snuggled down into the stamping, I made sure to come down the left, across the bottom, and about 1/4 of the way up the right side.
  • The sentiment on this card comes from Peaceful Moments. I stamped it in Bermuda Bay on white cardstock. I cropped the sentiment using a stitched rectangle die. Next, I cropped a Stitched So Sweetly mat for the greeting. It will be our secret that I cropped it from the Bermuda Bay mat under the white cardstock.
  • Using Bermuda Bay, I stamped Happy Birthday, on the inside of the not-so-simple card.
  • The #simplestamping card’s sentiment is much more simple. I used the birthday sentiment,, stamped it in Momento Tuxedo Black, and cropped it using a stitched rectangle die.
Anchors and Embellishments
  • Because of the placement of this sentiment, and to add some interest, I added Poppy Parade and Daffodil Delight to the bottom of the sentiment panel. I really amazed myself that I stamped the Poppy Parade just about perfectly. Complete happy accident, but it anchored the sentiment on the card.
  • I placed three elegant faceted dots on both cards. The #simplestamping card got three of the white dots, which add a bit of sparkle.
  • I wanted to have more of an impact with the dots on the not-so-simple card. Therefore, I grabbed my dark Bermuda Bay blend and colored each, let them dry, colored another layer, repeat, repeat.
  • This card also needed something to anchor the sentiment. Since I just wanted a subtle ribbon I grabbed one of my all-time favorite ribbon: the polka dot tulle ribbon. I simply wrapped it around the white cardstock/Bermuda Bay mat, and tied it in a square knot. The subtle ribbon presence seemed perfect to me.
  • Finally, I assembled all the pieces of the cards. Since I’d already stamped the front and flap of the envelopes, I had finished both of these coordinated card sets.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d also love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Poppies for FMS437

I’ll admit it, this sketch, while simple, really left me struggling for an idea. I’ve tried, and discarded, a few attempts but couldn’t find something that satisfied me. Until this morning when I pulled out my Painted Poppies stamp set.

Here’s my card front and inside:

Here’s the challenge banner:

What to Do With Five Blocks

The challenge cards from the design team and other challenge participants are so creative and do justice to the challenge sketch. Like I said, I struggled until I pulled out the Poppies DSP to create another card. A lightbulb went off and I figured out what I needed to do.

The Painted Poppies stamp set, which is carrying over (YES!), contains a single poppy and the leaf/stem combination. Three poppies and two leaf/stem combinations and I thought I finally had an idea. I used the light and dark Poppy Parade blends. In the poppy DSP, the greenery is Old Olive, so I colored mine using the Old Olive blends.

When I finished coloring, I thought this card definitely fit #simplestamping, so I stayed with that for the sentiment. Using sentiments from Sending You Thoughts, I simply stamped the sentiment on the front directly on the white cardstock.

Since I used Poppy Parade cardstock for the base of the card, I needed a Whisper White cardstock panel on the inside of the card as well. The inside sentiment continues well wishes from the front. Next, I stamped half of the stemmed poppies on the bottom, left-hand corner. Then I colored the poppies in just the light Poppy Parade blend.

Putting It Together

I did want some dimension on the front of the card, so I used dimensionals to pop the front panel off the base of the card. When I finished adhering the panel to the front I realized I had a tiny little smudge of black. I tried to use my Tombow sand eraser, specifically for ink, to no avail. Therefore, I had to come up with something as unobtrusive as possible to cover that tiny smudge. I have just a few of these black rhinestones left, and three of them on the front covered my smudge and kind of framed the flowers and sentiment.

After adhering a piece of the poppy DSP to the envelope flap, I stamped the stemmed poppies on the front, bottom left-hand corner of the envelope. Ta-da! I’d finished this card/envelope set and I think I stayed true to the sketch.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Sunflowers, #simplestamping and PCC377

The new Celebrate Sunflowers cling stamp set, available now on pre-order for Stampin’ Up! demos, is beautiful! The intricate details make each stamp in the set spectacular! I’ve been practicing coloring the flowers using different combinations of yellow blends, but haven’t found anything I really like yet. There are so many gorgeous colored sunflowers all over Pinterest and various Facebook groups just begging to be copied, so I will keep practicing.

Paper Craft Crew #377

Let’s just jump to the card and challenge banner.

Here’s my card:

Here’s the challenge banner:

When I usually create a card from a sketch challenge I first read the challenge post, look at the cards the Design Team created. Then I have the sketch tumbling around in my head for a few days until a card falls into place in my mind. That isn’t exactly how it worked this week.

The InKing Royalty Blog Hop is Wednesday and I used this bundle for my card. Here’s a little sneak peak of that card:

The whole time I was working on the card for the Blog Hop I kept thinking that I needed a simpler version to go with it. That’s when everything rolling around in my head for PCC377 came together.

#simplestamping

I wanted to make sure that everything I did for this card would qualify as #simplestamping. The Celebrate Sunflowers stamp set is the only new thing for this card. I used minimal supplies because I wanted to showcase the clean and simple sketch and resulting card.

I could’ve cropped both sunflowers using the coordinating die set. However, I actually did fussy cut both of them to stay with #simplestamping. Fussy cutting for a lefty tends to be a bit of a problem. These sunflowers proved to be some of the easiest fussy cuts I’ve done.

I stamped the large sunflower using Basic Gray. In order to let the large one shine, I used Smoky Slate on the smaller flower.

The strips of Neutrals 6 x 6 DSP from the current catalog in Night of Navy and Basic Gray allowed me to fill that element on the sketch. I also used Night of Navy as the base of the front of the card, and for the sentiment. This “thanks a bunch” sentiment also comes from the Celebrate Sunflowers cling stamp set.

I used the rectangle stitched die set to crop the sentiment block. It could have easily been cut on the paper trimmer. I intentionally cropped the sentiment on the reverse side because it has more texture and I thought the clean part of the card needed a little texture.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that I used the Subtle 3D embossing folder for the white background. Since all the lines run vertically, I also embossed the white cardstock so the texture runs vertically.

That’s All It Took

The challenge sketch called for a clean and simple card. I think this card fits the challenge.

The only thing I still needed to do was to add a piece of the Night of Navy DSP to the envelope flap. I stamped part of the large sunflower in the lower left corner of the envelope. With that, the coordinating set was complete.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

In Colors 2019-2021 for Fab Friday 166

Fab Friday 166 Card Challenge

Fab Friday for this 2 week period is to use all 5 of the new In Colors for 2019 – 2021.  Since I am off for the summer, I have been organizing and purging and came across painter’s tape.  The tape reminded me of a technique I used a few years ago, and I thought it would work pretty darn well.  The background mat for the card had to be Purple Posy since the ink and markers are not available yet.

Here’s my card and the challenge banner:

After that easy mat decision was made, I had to organize the remaining colors into the order of my stripes.  I  tried to get the colors a sunset kind of order, so the darkest is on the bottom and the lightest on the top.  The order from bottom up is Pretty Peacock, Seaside Spray, Terracotta Tile, and Rococo Rose.

If at First You Don’t Succeed,

Try, try, and try again.   The first time I tried “stamping” with the painter’s tape, it turned out way too dark.  The stripes are very simple to create;  simply take a length of painter’s tape and place it on the ink pad.  At first, my result was too dark, as pictured below.

My second attempt was to not press the tape on the ink pad as hard as I had done the first time.  However, that was still too dark.  I finally wound up stamping off the tape before lining it up on the card.  I really like the distressed look of the stripes, and can believe I got the stripes straight.  Success!

Free as a Bird

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to use the birds on a branch for this card.  Therefore, I stamped the birds, sentiment, and leave all in Tuxedo Black.

When I put the card together, including popping up the top layer on dimensionals, I decided that it needed “something”.  I still have some of the retired black dots from the holiday catalog, and put one in the center of the flowers below the branch and one on the leaves.

When I came back to the card the next day, I decided that it still needed something to make the stamped images really stand out.  I grabbed my clear Wink of Stella and applied a couple of layers to the stamped images.  It’s not easy to get pictures of Wink of Stella on cards, so I hope you can see the sparkles on the birds in the picture below:

I finally feel like the card is done.  Since everything was pretty easy, and since I only used Tuxedo Black ink, the Free as a Bird stamp set, and the Wink of Stella, I think I created a #simplestamping card.

Thank you for stopping by today.

Have a Peachy Day!
