Fall/Autumn Colors for Cardz 4 Guyz Challenge # 256

I live in Central Florida, about halfway between Orlando and Daytona Beach. I haven’t seen a real fall/autumn season since my youngest sister was in college. She had a swim meet in North Carolina and my parents and middle sister and I went to it. That was quite a while ago.

My daughter recently moved to northern California and will have a real autumn this year. If it wasn’t for one big problem (that which I don’t want to name tonight), I would go out there for a long weekend to see the leaves. As it is, I will just have to enjoy creating Thanksgiving cards for now.

Here’s my card for the #256 challenge:

The stamp sets I used were the Rooted in Nature and Autumn Greetings.

If you think there might be a difference between this card and the one on the Design Team page for C4G, you are correct. I knew something was off with the first card and couldn’t figure out what. As I was typing the measurements below, I realized I should have used Very Vanilla for the background on the front of the card. I’ll show you how I fixed that accident below.

Measurements

  • The card base is Cajun Craze trimmed to 4-1/4 inches by 11 inches, scored at 5-1/2 inches.
  • I trimmed a piece of Crushed Curry to 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches for the mat.
  • Next, I trimmed two pieces of the speckled DSP. The one on the front of the card measures 1-7/8 inches by 5 inches. I trimmed another piece for the envelope flap to 2-1/2 inches by 6 inches.
  • The Very Vanilla piece on the top background measures 3-1/8 inches by 5 inches. Originally, I had a piece of Whisper White for the background. Since I didn’t want to recreate the card, I had to figure out how to fix my mistake without starting over. Here’s a picture showing how I did that:
TA-DA! Problem solved. After cropping out the tree, I ran the vanilla cardstock through the Big Shot in the Subtle 3D embossing folder.
  • I also used Very Vanilla on the inside and that piece measures 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches.
  • The acorn and two leaves next to the sentiment were punched out of the Gilded Autumn DSP. The Autumn Punch Pack of mini punches makes this a very simple task. Best of all – no fussy cutting! I just LOVE when punches and/or dies work on the DSP perfectly!
  • In order to have a border between the top and the bottom, and without getting girly, I used linen thread wrapped around the speckled DSP three times and tied it in a square knot.
  • The Stamp-aratus allowed me to be able to repeatedly stamp the greeting on the speckled DSP until I achieved the depth of color I wanted.

The Tree

Instead of using ink pads to color the tree, I used Stamping Write Markers and my trusty Stamp-aratus. I could not have done it without that tool.

  • First, I used Crumb Cake and Early Espresso to color the trunk of the tree on the stamp, then stamped it.
  • I used the Crushed Curry marker to color the whole canopy of the tree for the first stamping.
  • Next, I used the thin end of the Early Espresso marker and traced in the branched in the canopy. Using the yellow first really made it easier to see the branches.
  • Then I used Pumpkin Pie andCajun Craze markers and randomly colored on the stamp, then pressed it down. I repeated that step and wound up with the colors you see on the front of the card. It reminds me of autumn trees from my childhood. The only thing missing is the big pile of raked leaves under the tree, just waiting for us to jump in it and then start raking again.
  • I put dimensionals under the tree so it stands off the background. The Crushed Curry bottom mat peeks through under the tree.

The Inside

  • I used another sentiment from Autumn Greetings for the inside of the card.
  • Since I didn’t want just a plain piece of cardstock, I used the speckle stamp from Forever Fern. I stamped it using Crumb Cake, and each time I inked, I stamped it three times. This really gives dimension to the speckles.

Finishing Up

Finally, I adhered the speckled DSP to the envelope flap and trimmed it down. With that, I’d finished this card/envelope set.

By the time I finished typing all the directions, I’d decided that I needed to try this card again. I really think I can create a much better version, but know I can’t do that tonight.

Thank you so much for stopping by today.

I’d love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Have a Peachy Day!

Rooted in Nature for Color Throwdown #614

Somewhere along the line the other day I saw a color challenge on one of the many challenges I follow. ctd614 colors for this week include purple, green, and khaki.

Here’s my card:

Here’s the challenge banner:

At first, I had pastels in mind, but I couldn’t get anything to work. Then I found this already stamped and cropped Mossy Meadow tree in the Rooted in Nature stamp set case. That’s how I came up with this color combination.

What I Did

  • I used the Rooted in Nature stamp set and coordinating dies for all the stamped images on the front of the card.
  • I stamped the cross-section of the tree three times without re-inking, starting in the bottom right-hand corner. The third stamp is just barely visible to the right of the tree, but that’s what I wanted.
  • I stamped the leaf trio and sentiment in Blackberry Bliss then cropped them out. The stitched rectangle die fits the sentiment perfectly.
  • I used the triple banner punch for both banners. Since I wanted a clean as possible card, I simply used a piece of Blackberry Bliss cardstock. The Mossy Meadow DSP provided the color for the thinner banner.
  • I knew I wanted to have some sort of natural twine on the card. After trial and error, I came up with just wrapping the linen thread around the DSP banner 5 times.
  • Dimensionals provide the depth for the tree, leaf trio, and sentiment. I used the multipurpose liquid adhesive for everything else. The use of this adhesive allows for a few seconds of wiggle time to get the position just right.

The Inside

Here’s the inside of the card:

  • I’ve had to create sympathy cards for the past few months, they are the difficult to create when needed. The Here’s a Card stamp set contains a sympathy stamp which coordinates with the sentiment on the front.
  • I second-generation stamped the cross-section of the tree using Soft Suede, just as on the front. Since I had a stamped and cropped leaf trio I adhered it on top of the cross-section.
  • I stamped the inside sentiment in Blackberry Bliss.
  • After adhering a piece of Soft Suede DSP to the envelope flap, I’d finished this sympathy card/envelope set.

Thank you so much for stopping by today.

I’d love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Have a Peachy Day!

Cardz 4 Guyz # 255 with Fab Fri 198 and CTS#392

I’m sure that, for so many of us, the weeks are just flying by. Aren’t there days when you just don’t want to wear a mask for another whole day? I know there are for me. I’ve realized something in the past week or so: teachers rely heavily on lip-reading, and masks just complicate things exponentially.

Anyway, the theme for Cardz 4 Guyz #255 is to create a clean and simple card. Sometimes that’s easier said than done. I started going through the blogs of various challenges looking for inspiration to hit, and I found it in the sketch challenge for CAS(E) This Sketch #392 and the colors for Fab Friday 198.

Here’s my CAS masculine card for the C4G design team and the two other inspiration challenges:

Here are the challenge banners:

CAS is the Key for This Week

I really had to hold myself back from running the front of the Gray Granite base through the Subtle embossing folder. The only thing that held me in check was that I knew I already had enough dimension since I popped up the focal banner on dimensionals as well as the sentiment.

Measurements and Embossing

  • The base is a standard A2 card, so it measures 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/5 inches, scored at 4-1/4 inches.
  • I trimmed a piece of Misty Moonlight to 4-1/4 inches by 3 inches to use it as the base of the focal image.
  • Next, I trimmed the Bumblebee cardstock to 4-1/8 inches by 2-7/8 inches for the middle mat. This seemed about the best way to incorporate the Bumbleebee color in my CAS masculine card.
  • The top Seaside Spray cardstock measures 4-1/8 inches by 2-3/4 inches.
  • I used a piece of scrap white cardstock for the sentiment and punched it out with the classic label punch.
  • While I had the white cardstock out, I trimmed a piece for the inside of the card to 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches.

Rooted in Nature

Rooted in Nature seemed to go along with the sketch from CTS, and the tree, inside and outside sentiments come from that set.

  • After carefully figuring out placement of the Misty Moonlight ribbon and the sentiment, I decided where the tree needed to be stamped.
  • Let the trial and error begin …
  • I knew I needed to use the Stamp-aratus, and that turned out to be the best decision while creating this card. After rubbing the cardstock with my embossing buddy, I stamped the tree using VersaMark three times.
  • Next, I covered the image with Smoky Slate embossing powder and then heat set it. That’s when I realized there wasn’t enough of a contrast between the Smoky Slate embossing powder and the Seaside Spray.
When at First You Don’t Succeed…….
  • Back to the Stamp-aratus for the next try. Again, thankfully I used it so I could easily line up the cardstock in the proper position. Don’t forget to use the embossing buddy now as well. This time I stamped the tree in Smoky Slate right on top of the heat set embossing powder. I did that four or five times trying to get some contrast to show up. Then, I covered the image with clear embossing powder and heat set the image again.
  • While there are places on the tree where the Smoky Slate shows through for some added depth, I still wasn’t really happy. I grabbed the Smoky Slate marker and started coloring over the tree. Imagine my delight when I realized that the marker added another element of depth by filling in all the negative space in the tree. I liked the effect so much, I outlined the whole tree with the marker as well.
  • Then, I placed a piece of the Misty Moonlight ribbon on the front. I secured the ends on the back of the focal panel using glue dots.
  • After placing dimensionals on the back of the focal panel and the sentiment, I put everything together.
  • The inside sentiment, again from Rooted in Nature, simply says “to thank you for all you do”.
  • With that, I’d finished this card for the Cardz 4 Guyz CAS design team, and the two challenges.

Thank you so much for stopping by today. Have a wonderful week. I can’t wait to see your CAS masculine cards on our challenge page!

I’d also love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Masculine Birthday Card for a (New to Me) Challenge

When I went to post my card to the DT blog for Make My Monday Challenge, themed Christmas in September, I found out about a new-to-me challenge, Cardz 4 Guyz. So many times, we all struggle with masculine cards, but I think this card will make it easier since there’s so much inspiration there. The current theme for this biweekly challenge #53 is monotone, chosen by Helen.

Here’s my card:

A Monotone Feel

I thought that the Misty Midnight and Early Espresso colors would work together to create an almost monotone card. Therefore, I chose the 2020 – 2022 In Color 6 x 6 DSP and the In Good Taste DSP, both of which can be found in the annual catalog. I added a piece of the burlap jute ribbon, topped by a piece of the Misty Moonlight ribbon.

Measurements

  • I used Misty Moonlight for the base of the card and it measures 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches, scored at 4-1/2 inches.
  • Next, I trimmed a piece of the In Good Taste DSP to 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches for the front of the card. While I had the DSP out, I also trimmed a piece to 2-1/2 inches by 6 inches for the envelope flap.
  • I chose the wood grain Misty Moonlight DSP thinking the wood grain would go well with the burlap background DSP. This piece of DSP was trimmed to 3-3/4 inches by 5-7/8 inches.
  • The inside of the card needed a piece of Whisper White cardstock trimmed to 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches. I haven’t added a sentiment on the inside yet. I will when I determine the recipient.
  • Next, I used the Rooted in Nature stamp set to stamp the tree in Early Espresso on scrap white cardstock. I stamped the sentiment at the same time on another scrap of white cardstock. Then, I cropped the tree using the coordinating Rooted in Nature die. I punched the sentiment using the Tailored Tag punch.
  • Since I had the Early Espresso ink out, I used the tall pine tree stamp on the front, bottom, right-hand corner of the envelope.

Assembly and Finishing Up

  • I used the multipurpose liquid glue to adhere the In Good Taste DSP to the base of the card.
  • The burlap ribbon doesn’t go all the way around the Misty Moonlight DSP because of the thickness it would add. Instead, I cut a piece of it to 4-1/4 inches to wrap it around the edges. I used glue dots to adhere the ends of the ribbon behind the DSP. In hindsight, it probably would have been better to use the tear and tape adhesive because of the thickness of the burlap.
  • I did wrap a piece of the Misty Moonlight ribbon all the way around and tied it in a square knot on the front.
  • Then, using multipurpose glue, I adhered the DSP to the front of the card.
  • I added dimensionals under the tree and the sentiment. I centered the tree over the ribbon combination. The sentiment tag didn’t quite fit under the ribbon combo. Therefore, I carefully centered the top of the punch right underneath the Misty Moonlight square knot. Then, I added a glue dot to keep the square knot in place.
  • After adhering and trimming the DSP to the envelope flap I’d completed this card/envelope coordinated set.

From the beginning, the picture I saw in my head was clean and simple. This allowed me to create a relatively easy-peasy card. The layout can be used for all kinds of occassions with all kinds of products.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d also love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Nature’s Roots for Sunday Stamps

I needed to create a sympathy card for a good friend whose father passed away suddenly a few days ago. Those cards are never easy to create, but Sunday Stamps color challenge gave me a neutral color palette and the Rooted in Nature stamp set and Nature’s Roots die set gave me the inspiration.

Here’s the challenge banner for this week’s challenge, SSC221:

Here’s my card:

SSC221 – Stay Neutral

The challenge required at least three of the neutral colors to be used. I could add in another color as long as the focal images were neutrals. I used Basic Black for the first mat and the sentiment. The background trees were stamped in Smoky Slate on Whisper White. I stamped the tree on Basic Grey using Versamark, then embossed the image with white embossing powder. The mat for the sentiment is also Basic Grey. Since I used four of the neutral colors I could add another color.

I love the In Color 2019 – 2020 of Seaside Spray. Love. It’s one of my favorite blues ever, and it pairs so well with this neutral color palette. Therefore, I used Seaside Spray for the base of the card and the sentiment layer, and the stunning ribbon from the holiday catalog. I ordered two extra rolls of it before Christmas and still have enough to use for quite a while, even though it retires at 2:00 AM ET.

I cropped both sentiment layers using one of my favorite die sets, the Rectangle Stitched framelits. The stitching gives such a finished and professional look to any paper cropped with them. They have become my go-to dies. I especially love to use them to crop out the centers of mats to save on cardstock and also lighten the card just a smidge.

As always,

Thank you so very much for stopping by my blog today. I appreciate your the time you take to read, and comment, on my blog.
