More Poppies for Just Add Ink # 497

Just Add Ink #497 has a pretty incredible sketch for this week. I went back to my current favorite DSP, Peaceful Poppies, for this card. Every pattern in this pack is fabulously gorgeous!

Here’s my card:

The DSP Does All the Work

I knew right away which pattern I wanted for the focal point of the card. One of the things I love the most about this paper is that it’s possible to get six gorgeous cards from one 12 x 12 piece of DSP.

At first I thought I’d out the green striped pattern in the middle tier. Even after I outined the three pieces with the Basic Black marker, I still tried to have it next to the floral pattern. It just didn’t work. Therefore, I moved the Blackberry Bliss polka dot pattern next to the floral. Score!

I actually tried stamping the THANK you sentiment directly on the floral DSP, but it just blended into the design and didn’t pop at all. So, I had to rethink what to do since perfectly clean was not going to work. I decided to use the Calypso Coral ribbon so there would be three pops of each color on the card. Calypso Coral is in the flowers, ribbon, and sentiment mat. Blackberry Bliss is the bottom mat, flowers, and polka dotted DSP. The various greens are in the stems, the bottom of the floral piece, and in the striped pattern. Follow the rule of threes to create a balanced card.

The Finishing Elements

This card falls into the easy peasy category, especially since I knew what DSP was going to be the focal pattern. While the bottom two layers are glued directly on the Whisper White background, I used dimensionals to pop up the floral piece of DSP. The sentiment is popped up on dimensionals as well.

I stamped the tall coordinating poppy on the front of the envelope and used blends to color it. Using the Calypso Coral and Old Olive blends combos on the front and the coloring was simply relaxing. Finally, I adhered a piece of the striped DSP to the envelope flap, which completed this set.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d love to hear what you think, and every comment is greatly appreciated!

Have a Peachy Day!

Yet More Peaceful Poppies for PPC371

It’s late on Monday night and the PPC371 closes tomorrow. Therefore, this post will be short and sweet.

This week’s sketch at Paper Craft Crew Challenge 371 called for splatters on the background.  While it really could have been a multitude of different combinations, I chose to stick with the Peaceful Poppies DSP and the Painted Poppies stamp set to create my card.

Here’s my card:

Peaceful Poppies

I am absolutely in love with this DSP and have been creating cards with it exclusively since the middle of last week.  Not even the cuteness of the ladybugs or the Welcome Easter stamp set has deterred me.

Once I chose the DSP pattern I wanted this time, the rest fell into place.  First, I used the large splatter stamp from Painted Poppies for the Poppy Parade and Old Olive splatter stamps. In order to get the various depths of color that I wanted,  I stamped each color three times without re-inking.

While I didn’t plan to do the sentiment next, it needed to be done.  As you know, I am all about cropping/punching out the layers to conserve paper.  This time was no different.  Because of the way I stamped the splatters, I could crop out the sentiment block from the middle of the card stock covered by the center circle.

I cropped the DSP circle using the Stitched Shapes die set. The Old Olive scalloped circle came from the Layering Circles die set. I also used the Basic Black Stampin’ Marker to outline the scallops and the stitches in the ditch.

Once I cut out the sentiment mat and cropped the scalloped trim from the Painted Labels die set, it was time to put the card together.

Once I stamped the front of the envelope with a poppy and added the DSP to the flap, this set was done.

More Poppies for Freshly Made Sketches 423

The poppies DSP, available in the current mini-cataog, is simply stunning. The colors are rich or soft, but always vibrant and beautiful. For today’s card, I chose the DSP with the soft Pool Party background. No matter the pattern with which you choose to work, Basic Black provides a grounding neutral color.

FMS423

I’d been thinking about what to do for this challenge for a few days. While driving home from work Friday evening, the whole card came together in my head.

Here’s my card:

Here’s the challenge banner:

The first thing I did while creating the card was to run the white cardstock through the Big Shot using the Subtle 3D embossing folder. Then, I trimmed the front down to 4-1/8 by 5-3/8. Trimming down cardstock before running it through the Big Shot for a deep embossing might cause a smaller piece than you want.

The shadows on the inside circle of DSP hints at the popped up front cover. There are so many dimensions on the backside of the front in an effort to keep it from caving in when I worked on the front.

I knew I wanted a black border around the circle, so I used the largest scalloped layering circle die. To crop out the inside of the scalloped frame, I used another of the circle dies. It required some carfeul placement, but I was able to get the frame even all the way around.

Choosing the DSP for the banners required some trial and error with different patterns from the Poppies DSP. Finally, I decided to use the Pool Party Subtles 6 x 6 DSP. The two strips needed something bold to make them stand out, so I used a strip of Basic Black. It’s a sharp contrast, but the black frame, strip, and sentiment allows the eye to travel down the card.

Finishing Touches

This wonderful two part sentiment is from the Sending You Thoughts stamp set, which is free with a qualifying order through Sale-a-Bration. Yes, Free. The inside of the card says “you’d be better already”. After stamping the front sentiment in Memento Tuxedo Black ink, I cropped it using the Stitched Rectangle dies. I outlined the sentiment block using the brush end of the black Stamping Write marker. Then I used the Pool Party Stamping Write marker to outline the stitches in the ditch.

With that, I only had to stamp the front of the envelope, then adhere DSP to the envelope flap. Another card and coordinating envelope set was complete.

Birthdays Abound for February’s InKing Royalty Blog Hop!

Welcome to InKing Royalty’s February Blog Hop! During this year’s blog hops, we are enjoying a year of celebrations. This month’s projects celebrate birthdays, so prepare yourself for a wonderful mix of celebratory cards. We are excited to share our creations with you today! After you read my post, I hope you’ll hop over to the next person on the list at the base of this post.

Happy Birthday!

Over the past few months of blog hops, I’ve been creating a card for a beginner stamper and a card for a more advanced stamper for each hop. I’ve done the same thing for this month as well. Looking at the front of the two cards, you wouldn’t know there is anything different between the two of them. However, when you open the more advanced card, the difference is clear.

Here’s the beginner card:

I bought a light box in which I could take pictures. For some reason, the pictures come out looking darker, even with additional OttLites pointed inside the box.

The inside of this card does have a stamped sentiment, but that’s basically it.

While the fronts look the same, there are some minor details making them different. Here’s the outside of the more advanced card:

The sentiment mat is equal all the way around on this front. I also tied the baker’s twine more deliberately on this card.

Here’s the inside of the advanced card:

I’ve made W fold cards before but I was inspired to stagger the inside panels by a Pinterest post by Sharon Armstrong. Her step-by-step instruction video can be found here. Sharon does point out to be very careful with the placement of sentiments because of the staggered panels. However, I wasn’t careful enough. The bottom of the farthest right panel is actually covering another birthday sentiment. Oops.

Poppies

While I’ve always purchased poppies on Memorial Day, they weren’t my favorite flower. That’s all changed now. Two weeks ago, another teacher and I took twelve juniors and seniors to Washington, D.C. from Central Florida. Naturally, one of the must-see places was Arlington Cemetery. One of our trolley tour guides had a family member buried there within the past few months, which just added to his passion for his job.

One of the things he shared with the group was why poppies are so important when remembering veterans on Memorial Day. At the end of the tour, he gave each person on the trolley a Memorial Day poppy. His dedication to his job was evident while on the tour. He explained the poppies and the poem “In Flanders Fields” to the kids, and the reason he purchases the poppies for everyone. His stories touched the kids and I don’t think they will ever forget the tour or the lessons learned.

Anyway, I share this story because of my new found love of this paper. While I have thought from the beginning that this DSP is beautiful, I hadn’t originally planned to purchase it . Now, I am beyond ecstatic that I did! The colors are stunning, and I am looking forward to using each piece of DSP, and will be ordering another pack before the end of the mini-catalog. If you haven’t purchased this DSP, you need to do so ASAP. You won’t regret the purchase!

Finishing Touches

First, I wound the baker’s twine around the DSP panel three times. Then, I used dimensionals to pop up the DSP panel on the front of both cards. Attaching the front of each card was one of the last things I did. Finally, I stamped on the front of the envelope and attached a piece of DSP to the flap. With that, these two cards and coordinating envelopes were done.
