The Color Throwdown #601 challenge for this week includes the generic colors orange, green, pink, and burgundy. Part of what I really enjoy with the ctd challenges is that the colors are generic. Therefore, there’s so much variety of colors used in the gallery cards. I chose Terracotta Tile, Just Jade, Petal Pink, and Merry Merlot.
Here’s my card:
Here’s the challenge banner:
Field of Poppies
Once I had my color choices, the rest of the card just fell into place. I really like this field of poppies stamp but knew I didn’t want to just have it at the bottom of the card. Therefore, I grabbed the Flowers for Every Season DSP and pulled the vine pattern and trimmed it down to 2 inches high.
I’d already stamped the poppies at the bottom of a piece of white cardstock, which explains how I knew I needed something else on the bottom.
The Merry Merlot base is 4-1/4 inches x 5-1/2 inches. I stepped down the Just Jade mat to 4-1/8 inches x 5-3/8 inches. I trimmed the Just Jade DSP to 2 inches x 4-1/8 inches. The white DSP is trimmed to 4 inches x 3-1/4 inches, which would give me just enough to overlap the DSP.
I stamped the poppie fields from Painted Poppies twice across the white cardstock using Momemto Tuxedo Black ink and then let it completely dry before I started coloring. I used the Terracotta Tile marker to control the bleeding.
Then, I needed to make a decision about some sort of texture on the white cardstock. At first I thought I would dry emboss it, but then changed my mind. I wound up using the splotch stamp from the Forever Fern to stamp the Petal Pink. After inking the splotch, I stamped it three times before re-inking. The different hues create depth and texture on the card.
Putting the Card Together
Next, I started putting the card together, and started with the white cardstock and DSP. Once I’d adhered those two pieces together, I moved onto the ribbon.
Since I am incredibly bow-challenged right now, I only trusted myself to tie a square knot. Therefore, I wrapped the Petal Pink organdy striped ribbon around the Just Jade base and simply tied it. I actually like that because the knot doesn’t overwhelm the bottom of the card.
I am all about saving cardstock when I can. Therefore, I cropped the scalloped circle for the sentiment from the Merry Merlot bottom layer, before adhering it of course. The sentiment on the front and inside of the card came from the SAB Sending You Thoughts stamp set. I used Merry Merlot to stamp the front and inside sentiments on white. Then, I cropped the sentiment using the medium circle from the Stitched Shapes die set. I kept the retired tiny paperclips from a couple of years ago and used that to help attach the sentiment to the top of the DSP. Multipurpose liquid adhesive is keeping the sentiment layer at the angle I wanted.
I adhered the front of the card to the Just Jade layer, and then adhered that to the Merry Merlot. Then I, attached all the layers to the front of the white card base. I’d stamped the inside sentiment at the same time I stamped the front. To add interest, I stamped part of the poppy field on the bottom corner of the inside. After letting it completely dry, I colored those poppies in Terracotta Tile as well.
Final Touches
As long as I was already coloring, I stamped some of the poppies on the bottom left corner of the front of the envelope. They also were colored in Terracotta Tile.
I used a 2-5/8 inch x 6 inch piece of the vine DSP to cover the flap of the envelope. Usually, at this point, I would consider myself finished. However, the more I looked at the front of the card, the more I thought I needed something else.
I’ve used the fine tip glue pen to “color” the poppies on the front of the card. The trick with that is to let the glue really, really dry completely before touching it. Therefore, I left it on my desk and went to bed.
Here’s are close-ups of the now “enameled” poppies:
When I first saw the four colors, I really thought they wouldn’t work together. However, work together they did.

I’ll admit it, this sketch, while simple, really left me struggling for an idea. I’ve tried, and discarded, a few attempts but couldn’t find something that satisfied me. Until this morning when I pulled out my Painted Poppies stamp set.
Here’s my card front and inside:

What to Do With Five Blocks
The challenge cards from the design team and other challenge participants are so creative and do justice to the challenge sketch. Like I said, I struggled until I pulled out the Poppies DSP to create another card. A lightbulb went off and I figured out what I needed to do.
The Painted Poppies stamp set, which is carrying over (YES!), contains a single poppy and the leaf/stem combination. Three poppies and two leaf/stem combinations and I thought I finally had an idea. I used the light and dark Poppy Parade blends. In the poppy DSP, the greenery is Old Olive, so I colored mine using the Old Olive blends.
When I finished coloring, I thought this card definitely fit #simplestamping, so I stayed with that for the sentiment. Using sentiments from Sending You Thoughts, I simply stamped the sentiment on the front directly on the white cardstock.
Since I used Poppy Parade cardstock for the base of the card, I needed a Whisper White cardstock panel on the inside of the card as well. The inside sentiment continues well wishes from the front. Next, I stamped half of the stemmed poppies on the bottom, left-hand corner. Then I colored the poppies in just the light Poppy Parade blend.
Putting It Together
I did want some dimension on the front of the card, so I used dimensionals to pop the front panel off the base of the card. When I finished adhering the panel to the front I realized I had a tiny little smudge of black. I tried to use my Tombow sand eraser, specifically for ink, to no avail. Therefore, I had to come up with something as unobtrusive as possible to cover that tiny smudge. I have just a few of these black rhinestones left, and three of them on the front covered my smudge and kind of framed the flowers and sentiment.
After adhering a piece of the poppy DSP to the envelope flap, I stamped the stemmed poppies on the front, bottom left-hand corner of the envelope. Ta-da! I’d finished this card/envelope set and I think I stayed true to the sketch.

Welcome to my first post as a newbie member of the Make My Monday Design Team. I am thrilled to be joining this talented group of papercrafters!
Challenge # 119 is to create your own background. For some reason, I struggled with creating a background. However, on the positive side, I now have three cards to add to my stash.
Here’s my card:
Poppies and Balmy Blue
I started out thinking that I would use Pool Party, but quickly realized I needed a better choice. Until this card, I would’ve grabbed Seaside Spray because I love the frostiness and beachiness of that blue. However, I grabbed Balmy Blue and decided I would try that shade of blue. WOW! Whisper White, Balmy Blue and Basic Black. Fabulous color combination if I do say so myself.
Once I made my mind up to just go with it, pulling this card together happened relatively easily.
Step by Step
First, I used my embossing buddy to clean the white cardstock to prep it for embossing. Next, I stamped two poppies at a time using the Momento Tuxedo Black ink, Then, I put clear embossing powder on the two wet poppies and repeated until I had my cardstock randomly covered.
I really wanted the embossed poppies to show up nicely. I needed to use the clear powder because the black embossing powder is on backorder, . If I hold the card just so under my OttLite, the embossing does show. I just don’t think the recipient will do that, which is ok because the card is pretty as it is.
After I used my heat tool to set the embossing powder, I used the blotch stamp from the Painted Poppies cling stamp set with Balmy Blue ink. It didn’t matter if the blotches lined up perfectly, at least to me.
The Top, the Layers, and the Finishing Touches
After stamping the poppy on the sentiment circle, I had to find a sentiment that would fit in the space left on the circle. The birthday sentiment on the outside came from the Peaceful Moments cling stamp set. I used the Sending You Thoughts cling stamp set for the inside sentiment. Since I wanted the sentiment to be the focal point on the circle I decided not to color the poppy. The black dimensionals provided the height for the sentiment circle.
The layers of Balmy Blue and Basic Black behind the sentiment were cropped using the layered circles die set.
After I finished the sentiment circle, I grabbed some of the Basic Black satin ribbon and tied a square knot to the right of the sentiment.
Finally, I started putting the card pieces together. I used Balmy Blue for the base, then a bottom mat of Basic Black, followed by a layer of Balmy Blue. Then I adhered the top white cardstock to my layers to finish off the front.
The only thing left was to stamp the inside sentiment and another poppy. After I adhered the panel to the base, I adhered a piece of the Balmy Blue DSP to the envelope flap.
With that, I had finished this card set.

Poppy Repeat
I’ve already posted a card with a random poppy pattern which I watercolored and embossed. You can find that post here. I also created a monochromatic card in Balmy Blue and Basic Black, which will be posted live tomorrow in the Make My Monday card challenge DT post. Please come back tomorrow to see that card, which I think is the prettiest out of the three. All three layouts are different even though they use the large poppy stamp.
The first thing I should have done, was cut down my Whisper White top layer to the 4′ x 5.25′ size. Just believe me here, cut it down first, or definitely before you cut the three pieces apart. Don’t ask me how I know.
I just stamped random poppies on the cardstock. Then, I cut the cardstock on my trimmer to get the three pieces. Finally, I stamped the blotches in the three color challenge colors, one of each piece. It really doesn’t matter that the blotches line up perfectly and I purposefully stamped them randomly.
I’ve been itching to use this gorgeous Petal Pink ribbon and have really wanted to try to make a bow with it. I didn’t even think I could create a decent bow since I struggle so much with making them. I have heard that I should use bunny ears to create bows. However, I just don’t get it. I really need a right-handed person to sit across from me so I can learn how to do it. After a few tries, and some rearranging, I couldn’t believe I actually created a satisfactory bow!
I kept thinking birthday for this card. I used the Peaceful Moments cling stamp set to stamp the sentiment. The layered circles die set cropped all three layers. Once they were together, I popped them up on dimensionals. The sentiment circle fit perfectly over the ribbon.
Finishing Touches
Truly, that was it: stamp, cut, stamp, put together. This card is so easy that, if I had all the cardstock layers cut ahead of time, I could put ten of them together in about 30 minutes.
All I needed to do was put all the layers on the base, which is Pool Party, and add a white panel with a sentiment for the inside. I used a piece of the Pool Party 6 x 6 DSP for the envelope flap, and this card/envelope set was done.
As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog today. I’d love to hear what you think, and every comment is greatly appreciated!

Just Add Ink #497 has a pretty incredible sketch for this week. I went back to my current favorite DSP, Peaceful Poppies, for this card. Every pattern in this pack is fabulously gorgeous!

Here’s my card:
The DSP Does All the Work
I knew right away which pattern I wanted for the focal point of the card. One of the things I love the most about this paper is that it’s possible to get six gorgeous cards from one 12 x 12 piece of DSP.
At first I thought I’d out the green striped pattern in the middle tier. Even after I outined the three pieces with the Basic Black marker, I still tried to have it next to the floral pattern. It just didn’t work. Therefore, I moved the Blackberry Bliss polka dot pattern next to the floral. Score!
I actually tried stamping the THANK you sentiment directly on the floral DSP, but it just blended into the design and didn’t pop at all. So, I had to rethink what to do since perfectly clean was not going to work. I decided to use the Calypso Coral ribbon so there would be three pops of each color on the card. Calypso Coral is in the flowers, ribbon, and sentiment mat. Blackberry Bliss is the bottom mat, flowers, and polka dotted DSP. The various greens are in the stems, the bottom of the floral piece, and in the striped pattern. Follow the rule of threes to create a balanced card.
The Finishing Elements
This card falls into the easy peasy category, especially since I knew what DSP was going to be the focal pattern. While the bottom two layers are glued directly on the Whisper White background, I used dimensionals to pop up the floral piece of DSP. The sentiment is popped up on dimensionals as well.
I stamped the tall coordinating poppy on the front of the envelope and used blends to color it. Using the Calypso Coral and Old Olive blends combos on the front and the coloring was simply relaxing. Finally, I adhered a piece of the striped DSP to the envelope flap, which completed this set.
