Magnolias for Fusion and Freshly Made Sketches

A Clean Sketch

The Fusion Challenge always has options: use just the sketch, use the theme, or combine them. The theme this week is Winter. We haven’t had winter weather, or our version of it, in Florida, yet. Although we are in for a few cold days this week.

Therefore, I used just the sketch from Fusion, which also matched the Freshly Made Sketches 418. Here are both banners:

Here’s my card:

Thinking About This Sketch

A couple of the Fusion design team members created cards with stitching on the rounded panel. I thought about that for days, searched my die sets, and couldn’t come up with something for the correct shape. I finally decided to use a saucer to create that panel. Thankfully, I remembered to trace the saucer on the backside of the magnolia DSP so I didn’t have to deal with erasing pencil marks.

Since I knew I wanted to go with the Petal Pink background panel, I had to figure out what to do so the whole thing didn’t just look blah. I decided to add the Mossy Meadow liner, but then needed to tie all three papers together. That’s when I decided to use Mossy Meadow for the base of the card. I traced the saucer on Mossy Meadow, cut it out, and trimmed it down.

True to form, I cropped the Petal Pink and Mossy Meadow layers so there aren’t full sheets of cardstock under the panel. Even though I used Mossy Meadow, I think the whole card appears soft and clean.

Finishing Touches

For some reason, I had the Whisper White scalloped oval in my page protector of white “scraps”, which gave me the perfect start to a sentiment panel. I didn’t want a stark white sentiment piece, so I stamped the single magnolia in Petal Pink, and then added the sentiment in Mossy Meadow. Even with dimensionals, the plain white scalloped oval would just fade into the magnolia DSP. Therefore, I used the oval stitched shape die and cropped it in Petal Pink.

The final touch was to add a Whisper White panel to the inside of the card. I stamped the flourish from the Good Morning Magnolia stamp set on the bottom of the inside panel and adhered it down.

After I added a panel of the Magnolia DSP to the envelope flap, I had finished this card and envelope set.

Very Thankful for November’s InKing Royalty Blog Hop

Welcome to InKing Royalty’s November Blog Hop! This year’s Blog Hop themes are inspired by a single word – and this month our projects are centered around GRATEFUL. Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and we are grateful you’ve stopped by. We are excited to share our Thanksgiving-themed or grateful-centered projects with you! After you read my post, I hope you’ll hop over to the next person on the list at the base of this post.

Counting My Blessings

Over the course of the last couple of months, I’ve made more than fifteen different Thanksgiving cards, which I will give out on Thursday. I really felt like creating something other than a Thanksgiving card, so I created a “thank you” card. Well, actually, I created two. The first card I created is a double z-fold card using the Magnolia Lane Suite of products. As I was happily coloring, cutting, and stamping, I thought I should also create a card for the beginner or casual stampers/card-creators. No matter your experience level, I hope you will enjoy the two cards I created.

Without further ado, here’s multiple views of the double z-fold card and the more streamlined cards:

The Double z-fold Card

I love fun-fold cards. I’ve created all kinds of them, and we won’t even mention my Pinterest board for just these fun creations.

Once I decided on a double z-fold card, I decided to use my brand new Magnolia Memory dies. I ordered products from this suite one at a time since I didn’t know if I really wanted all of it. Finally, I had enough with fussy-cutting and ordered the dies.

With my DSP decisions made, I happily started stamping and coloring and cropping. Just a little hint, I find it much easier to color before cropping with the dies, or punches. I used the Petal Pink blends combo to color the flowers. The leaves on the stamped images, and the leaves cropped with the dies, were colored with the Mossy Meadow blends combo. I used the brush ends of the MM blends combo and just colored a swatch of Whisper White cardstock in order to get a layered look for the die cut leaves . I traced the leaves onto the colored swatch, fussy cut them, and attached the cropped leaves to the undersides. Two of these leaves were added to the flower collage on the front. The third leaf found a happy home under the magnolia on the inside.

Bringing It All Together

Since I wanted to dress up the z-fold piece of DSP, I attached a lenth of the ribbon to the whole strip. Then I used the twine from the combo to make a bow for the front of the card.

When I dry-fit the flowers, leaves, and ribbon on the front of the card and realized my sentiment block on the inside would show more than I wanted. I already had the perfect piece of cropped petal pink cardstock, and stuck it behind the flowers. Amazingly, I was able to cover the sentiment block on the inside and the petal pink piece of cardstock fits in the collage. Win-win.

One of my favorite go-to die sets is the Stitched Rectangles, and I used that to crop the front and inside sentiment boxes.

I wanted to add something to the inside to dress up the end of the card, which would also help anchor the magnolia. I grabbed the scalloped die and cropped it, Then , I decided I could texture it with the Subtle 3D folder. Lesson learned ~ emboss before cropping. I had to use the die to rub the edge back on the scallop. Emboss, then crop.

A Clean Card is a Beautiful Thing

I used the same DSP to create this card front as I did on the double z-fold card. Same ribbon, same sentiment and cropped box with the same magnolia leaves stamped in the corners. However, I only used one magnolia on the front, to which I added a much simpler bow. Truth be told, that’s the only bow I could get out of my now used-up twine. Time to order more.

Once again, I cropped a scalloped strip of Mossy Meadow, but did not emboss it to keep with the cleaner version. I stamped the gorgeous large magnolia in Petal Pink on the inside, and added the same sentiment on top of the flower.

Both envelopes for these cards are exactly the same. There’s a Petal Pink magnolia stamped off the lower left front corner. Each of the flaps had DSP added to create a coordinated set.

Both of these cards were extremely fun to create. After all, isn’t a hobby supposed to be relaxing and fun?

Harvest Hellos for the Fusion and Color Throwdown Challenges

Have to Love a Two-fer

As you know, I love being able to combine challenges.  In this case, I combined the colors from ctd564 and sketch from Fusion-Dragonfly.

Here are the challenge banners:

Here’s my card:

Another Easy Peasy Card

Since the sketch and colors were pre-determined, this card came together so fast.  All I had to do was pick out a stamp set and DSP.  Everything else fell into place.

I used the Magnolia Lane DSP for the brown and white background.  Just that fast, and I had the first color.

Crushed Curry seemed like a fall-ish yellow color, which seems to work with this color combination.  I cropped the circle using the largest Stitched Shapes circle, then colored in the ditch using the Crushed Curry marker.  From the start, I knew I wanted this to be a get well card and needed to figure out what to do about a flat Crushed Curry circle just plopped in the middle of the card.  I decided to use the splatter stamp from Gather Together and stamped first and second generation stamps in Crushed Curry.  The splatter gives the plain circle much needed texture, especially since the sentiment is small.  Color two down, one to go.

I chose Real Red for the apple and the base of the card.  I colored the apple using the Real Red blends combo.  In order to achieve the look of the lighter spots, I simply used the color lifter blend.  I popped up the apple using dimensionals.  Since I’d already popped up the Crushed Curry circle using dimensionals, the left side of the apple has a double layer of them.  I felt that some additions needed to be made to the card, even though I had used the third required color, .

Finishing Touches

After squinting to check for balance (Brian King, I owe you another nickle), I thought the apple and sentiment appeared to be floating on the Crushed Curry circle.  Therefore,  I went back to the Harvest Hellos stamp set and decided to use the apple seeds to anchor the apple.  After stamping the seeds in Early Espresso, I colored them using Soft Suede.

I still thought the card needed some sort of embellishments, so I tied a piece of linen thread around the apple stem.  Then I turned my attention to the apple seeds.  I couldn’t think of anything 3D to put over them, so I made my own “epoxy” apple seeds using the fine-tip glue pen.  Just by carefully applying glue to the seeds, and letting it thoroughly dry, I created my own seeds.

Here’s a close-up of the seeds:

After using the same DSP for the envelope flap, I stamped and colored half an apple and some seeds on the envelope front.

Easy-Peasy – truly easy and quick.

Magnolias for Global Design Project # 210

#GDP210 ~ and it’s not even Sunday evening

I’m usually right down to the wire for the GDP challenge.  Not this week.  I finished this card on Wednesday, but am just now blogging it.

I’ll be perfectly honest, when I first saw this Magnollia Lane Suite, I was skeptical and was just going to get the stamp set, ribbon, 3D embossing folder, and DSP.  All of those things have just been sitting in their happy little homes since I got them.  About a week or so ago, I decided to try them out.  WOW!!  I now need more twine and the dies.  This set is gorgeous!!  I’ve created 3 cards using the supplies I have in the past week, one of which I created specifically for the #GDP210 challenge.

Here’s the challenge banner:

Here’s the front of my card:

Inspired by the Sketch

I really think the sketch inspiration shows through in my card.  The placement of the ribbon for the horizontal stripe section wound up on the bottom of the card instead of the top, basically because that placement made more sense.  Everything else followed the sketch pretty closely.

The Magnolia Lane DSP is truly beautiful, and there are a number of cards in the current catalog just begging to be CAS(E)d.  I chose the Mossy Meadow leafy DSP for the background and the semi-open white magnolia DSP for the center panel.  Both are layered on Petal Pink cardstock.

I wanted a small scallop for the bottom border of the center panel, but couldn’t find what I wanted in my stash of products.  So, I improvised and punched out 1/2″ circles from Petal Pink 6×6 DSP.   Imagine my surprise when I dry fit the circle onto the Petal Pink mat and found that I didn’t have to trim anything off the sides.

Next came the focal panel, onto which I stamped my sentiment and one single magnolia.   Coloring these magnolias is enjoyable and peaceful.   I used the Petal Pink combo for the petals.  Since I don’t have the Mossy Meadow blends, YET, so I used the Old Olive blends combo followed up with Mossy Meadow marker to outline the leaves and veins.

I stamped the flourish from the stamp set on the bottom of the white focal panel.  Then I decided ribbon would be better, so I tied a bow over the flourish.  All is well.  Life is Good.

Finishing Touches

I added a pink faceted dot to the top, left of the focal panel because I thought I needed to create a triangle of elements for balance.

The Mossy Meadow marker allowed me to easily outline both the focal panel and the magnolia panel.  I popped the focal panel up with dimensionals, then turned my attention to the inside sentiment.

Here’s the inside:

Once again, I anchored the sentiment with a quick stamp of the single magnolia in Petal Pink.

I used the same Mossy Meadow leafy DSP for the envelope flap.  I stamped the flourish on the front, bottom, center of the envelope.

With that, I had finished my card and envelope.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog today.  A big thanks, in advance, for taking the time to leave a comment.

Magnolia Lane meets Cas(E) This Sketch #327

June 26th and 27th are Special Days at SU!

In just a few hours, 12:01 am MT, the Clearance Rack will be loaded with retiring stamp sets.  Stamps sets….on clearance?  Yes, please!

On the 27th, at 10 am MT, the trimmer blades will be available until supplies run out.  How many orders will you be placing to be able to get groups of 3 trimmer blades?

If you are desperately searching for

Magnolia Lane DSP is Beautiful!

As a demo with a great hobby, I need to really plan out my purchases, so I’ve only gotten the Magnolia Lane DSP and the Magnolia 3D embossing folder.  I used two different patterns of the DSP with a debossed magnolia flower for the focal portion of this card.

Here’s my card:

And here’s the sketch:

As you can see, I was very literal about using the sketch for inspiration.  I wound up using the debossed side of the magnolia, but I thought it needed something to make it stand out.  I didn’t want to add color, so I wound up using the clear Wink of Stella to highlight each of the debossed sections. While I feel semi-satisfied, my husband likes the card, so I am leaving it alone.

Putting It ALL Together

I really gave my trimmer a workout for this challenge.  I kept trimming and trimming until I got a layout with which I was happy.

My next challenge was the greeting.  I knew that I wanted to leave the white space at the bottom, but I also needed a sentiment.  This one, from Free as a Bird, fit the space and seemed to have a balancing effect.  After I create a simple banner, I stamped it, outlined the banner using the Petal Pink marker, then popped the whole thing up on dimensionals.

Dimensionals also pop up the darker magnolia circle, which I cropped using the Stitched Shapes die set.  I used the Layering Circles die set, which provided the mat for the magnolia.

I really enjoy sketch challenges because of the given layout for inspiration.  However, it’s always interesting to see how many different variations of cards are posted to the individual challenges each week.

Thanks so much for stopping by today.

Have a Peachy day!
