Make My Monday #138 – Make Your Own Background

I can’t believe that I waited so long to get this Snowman Season stamp set! I have had an absolute blast with it, and my friends all loved their snowman cards. You can see those cards here. While the previous cards were clean and simple, this card is anything but.

Here’s my card:

Creating My Own Background – Two steps

I think the subtle variations of color in the Balmy Blue background show up better in person. Since I did not want a solid piece of colored cardstock, I used a sponge brayer. The brayer allowed me to create a very subtle texture using the Balmy Blue ink.

Once the ink completely dried, I had some fun with the snowflake stamp from Snowman Season and some VersaMark ink. First, and foremost, I made sure to use my embossing buddy all over the background. The buddy lifts oils from fingerprints, which creates cleaner images. Next, I randomly stamped the snowflakes all over the blue background. Make sure to turn the snowflake stamp so you don’t create a uniform pattern. Then I covered the snowflakes with white embossing powder, and heat set it all. Don’t you just love watching the magic happen?

I used glossy white cardstock and the fabulous curvy dies to create the snow drifts. The curvy die made the whole process so easy since I wanted to have different shaped drifts.

Here’s a look at the bundle:

QUITE CURVY VARIETY BUNDLE (ENGLISH)

I just used the plain curvy die for this card, but there are so many other combinations available. The Quite Curvy stamp set and Curvy dies bundle can be purchased separately or as a suite with all the products shown above.

Since I wanted the curvy bottom layer to lay flat against the background, so I used multipurpose liquid glue to adhere it. I used dimensionals to pop up the middle layer, However, I only put them along the bottom to allow room for the snowman to slip between the layers. The very front layer covers a happy mistake, so I just used the multipurpose liquid adhesive.

The Snowman and the Sentiment

I stamped the snowman in Momento Tuxedo Black ink onto white cardstock. Since all the pieces all punch out from the snowman punch, I created a template for stamping using a piece of scrap cardstock.

Here’s my template:

This way I know that what I stamp will line up in the punch.

After stamping, I punched out all the pieces and assembled my snowman. Easy peasy.

The Christmas Means More stamp set quickly found its way into my heart. This sentiment is one of four movie quotes contained in the stamp set. Can you guess the movie? Miracle on 34th Street! While I enjoy the remake, my favorite version features a young Natalie Wood. The set also contains a quote from ELF, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and It’s a Wonderful Life.

I chose this sentiment because the snowman reminds me of Frosty the Snowman, who possessed magical snowman skills. For me, it works. I stamped the sentiment in Night of Navy and cropped it using the Rectangle Stitched die set.

Finally, I decided I wanted to add some ribbon. However, I only wanted a subtle ribbon. This polka dot tulle ribbon (my favorite!!!) fit the bill. I wrapped it around the side of the card tied a bow. The tulle added ribbon but I think the polka dots work with the rest of the card.

Thank you so much for stopping by today.

I’d love to hear what you think, and greatly appreciate every comment.

Have a Peachy Day!

It’s Christmas Time for the November InKing Royalty Blog Hop!

Welcome to InKing Royalty’s November Blog Hop! During this year’s blog hops, we are enjoying a year of celebrations. This month’s projects celebrate Christmas, which – believe it or not – is just around the corner. Please prepare yourself for lots of beautiful projects that share the joy of this holiday. We are excited to share our creations with you today! After you read my post, I hope you’ll hop over to the next person on the list at the base of this post.

A friend asked me to make her teenage niece a cute Christmas card. Snowmen are cute, right? I used the Snowman Season photopolymer stamp set. I’ve been looking at it for a year and finally ordered it a couple of months ago. I am so glad I did! I made this card using the Fab Friday #201 sketch for the layout.

Here’s my card:

That happy dancing snowman is too cute! I used a Night of Navy/Seaside Spray color scheme with a bit of foil to keep the card from appearing too cutesy.

Here’s the Fab Friday 201 banner for this challenge:

Supplies and Measurements:

  • The Seaside Spray base of the card measures 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches, scored at 4-1/4 inches.
  • I used a piece of the Night of Navy 6 x 6 inch DSP for the background mat, and trimmed it to 4-1/8 inches by 5-3/8 inches.
  • Next, I ran a piece of Seaside Spray cardstock through the Big Shot using the brick and mortar 3D embossing folder. Then, I cropped it using one of the stitched rectangle dies. The final panel measures 3-3/4 inches x 5-1/8 inches.
  • I used multipurpose liquid adhesive on both the Night of Navy DSP and the brick embossed Seaside Spray cardstock to adhere them to the card base. This is my favorite adhesive, and I may or may not be hoarding it so I don’t run out. I have 3 containers in the jar on my desk and 18 in my adhesive drawer. I got down to three containers before and will never let myself get that low again. Strange – I will let my car run as low on gas as possible before refilling it. However, adhesive? I’m all about buying that when I get down to a dozen containers. Go figure………..
  • The foil is the reverse side of a scrap piece of the Frost DSP. It measures 3-1/4 inches long and wide enough to attach on the back of the white panel.
  • The white cardstock for the front was trimmed to 3-3/4 inches by 2-1/2 inches. While I had the white cardstock out, I trimmed a piece to 4 inches by 5-1/4 inches for the inside.

Snowman and Snowflake Fun!

  • I didn’t want a plain white space background for the snowman/sentiment panel. Therefore, I used the snowflake stamp from Snowman Season and my Seaside Spray ink pad. Since I wanted subtle snowflakes, I stamped it off once, then stamped twice on the white cardstock. The varying snowflake colors add depth to the white cardstock. I didn’t want snowflakes behind the snowman, and made sure I didn’t stamp where I planned on placing the snowman.
  • Both the snowman and the sentiment were stamped in Night of Navy. I used the light Pumpkin Pie blend for the carrot nose. That little pop of orange just completely works for a teenager card.
  • I used the light Seaside Spray blend to color in the snowman. Then, I used the color lifter blend three or four times to life off almost all of the color. When using the color lifter, make sure you let it dry completely before adding more.
  • The card really needed some ribbon. However, the beautiful Seaside Spray ribbon wasn’t wide enough and has a sophisticated feel. I didn’t want to add another color to the card, so I used the light Seaside Spray blend and colored the polka dot tulle ribbon. After wrapping the ribbon around the foil and white cardstock piece, I tied it in a square knot. It came out just like I saw it in my head.
  • I stamped a non-symmetric snowflake frame around the inside white cardstock panel. Then I stamped Merry Christmas in Night of Navy in the center of the inside.
  • Finally, I added a strip of the foil DSP and a piece of the Night of Navy DSP to the envelope flap. With that, I’d finished this coordinated card/envelope set.

I Just Had a Thought I Must Try SOON!

Sitting here typing this, I thought how cute would this be if I made the white piece into a shaker card using the Stampin’ Up! clear envelopes. If this post didn’t need to go live early in the morning, I would start the shaker right now! Stay tuned for those results.

Twist & Pop Snowman card for the September Sparkles Challenge & Creative Creases

Welcome to the September edition of the Sparkles Christmas Challenge! Our host for this month, Caz, chose the theme of snowman for challenge # 152. When you finish here, I hope you will visit the challenge site to see the wide variety of snowman cards from the rest of the design team members. I can’t wait to see what you create and upload to the gallery!

I found this fun fold videos about 6 weeks ago and knew I would be making three of these for the great-nieces and great-nephew for Christmas. MayMay, from MayMay Made It, has two videos for this fun fold. You can find the links for them here and here. The first one explains the mechanism made with one sheet of cardstock and some scoring. The second one explains how to create the snowman. She even included a pattern for the mittens which can be printed from her blog post..

Here’s the inside of my stinking adorable snowman card:

I feel like the outside is just for show, but here it is:

I will be uploading this snowman to the Creative Creases Challenge as well. You can find the link for that challenge here.

MayMay Made It:

  • I used the directions and measurements found in MayMay’s videos, with a few adjustments.
  • After I did all the scoring and folding for the white inside pop and twist part, I closed it up and trimmed an extra 1/8 off of the top and bottom so the Misty Moonlight cardstock border was more even on the inside.
  • I trimmed the mechanism that holds the mittens to an inch wide in order to accommodate the size of the mittens.
  • I adhered both mittens to the bottom parts of the mechanism.
  • HINTS:
    • Before I did anything with the snowman parts, I turned the white cardstock over and used my bone folder to try to flatten out the vertical score line as much as possible.
    • Before drawing the face, adhere the DSP 9designer series paper) you are using for the scarf. Trust me, you want to adhere this piece first
    • I used a 1-inch circle punch for the buttons. I created the dots using the biggest end of a scoring tool and white craft ink.
    • I used a banner die from the Stylish Shapes die set for the letter banners.
    • I punched the eyes with a 1/2-inch hole punch and just trimmed a piece of Pumpkin Pie cardstock for the nose.
    • The embossing folder for the front is included in the new mini-catalog which goes llive in just a few days. YEAH! After embossing the snowflakes, I very lightly swiped the StayzOn white ink pad over the top.
    • This card will tightly fit in the medium basic white envelopes. However, it will require extra postage.
  • MayMay’s videos are very easy to follow. I’ll be posting my other versions of this card soon!

Thanks so much for stopping by today!

Have a Peachy Day!

A Christmas Card for the November SU! Demos Fun Fold Hop

Welcome back to the monthly Stampin’ UP! Demonstrators Fun Fold Blog Hop. If you love fun folds, you’ve come to a hop filled with really great projects by some very talented fellow demonstrators. When you finish here, I hope you will hop along with the rest of the demos using the links below.

It’s just a given that fun fold cards also post to the Creative Creases challenge. Debbie Mageed at Secret Stamper coordinates both this hop and the challenge. Hopefully, you will be inspired to upload your own fun fold project to the challenge!

Here’s my pop-up polar bear card:

MayMay, from MayMay Made It, has two videos for this fun fold. You can find the links for the step-by-step tutorial videos here and here. The first one explains the mechanism made with one sheet of cardstock and some scoring. The second one explains how to create the snowman. She even included a pattern for the mittens which can be printed from her blog post..

You can find my snowman blog post here.

Please note that the snowman card will fit inside a medium envelope and can be mailed with additional postage. However, both the snowman and polar bear cards will be hand-delivered to my great-nieces. Now, I just need to create one for my great-nephew. I’m trying to figure out how to make a Santa card next, so stay tuned.

Measurements:

Inside:

Please refer to MayMay’s videos for the full set of measurements for the pop-and-twist inside of the card. Here’s a picture of the prototype that I kept so I have them handy when I create these cards:

Outside:

  • The Night of Navy base measures 11 by 4-1/4 inches, scored at 5-1/2 inches to create a tent fold.
  • The Real Red cardstock mat for the front measures 4-1/8 by 5-3/8 inches.
  • The DSP pieces on the front of the card come from the Beary Christmas DSP, which is retiring soon. You can find the links to this set below in the supplies used section.
  • The pawprint piece of DSP measure 5-1/4 by 2-3/8 inches.
  • The two polar bear pieces of DSP measure 1-1/4 by 1-1/2 inches.
  • The gift piece of DSP measures 1-1/2 by 2-5/8 inches.
  • I trimmed a coordinating piece of DSP to 6 by 2-1/2 inches for the envelope flap.
  • Punch a 1-inch circle from coordinating DSP for the envelope seal, which will need to be run through your XYRON create-a-sticker.
  • I used a piece of scrap Real Red cardstock for the sentiment panel.

Assembly:

  • Dimensionals were used under the sentiment. Since I am hand-delivering this card, I can make it thicker than if it needed to be mailed.
  • I used multipurpose liquid glue to adhere all the paper pieces.
  • There’s a glue dot under the bow to hold it in place.
  • Adhere the DSP pieces to the Real Red mat.
  • Wrap a length of Real Red ribbon around the card so that it covers the space between the pawprint DSP and the other pieces. Secure with a mini glue dot.
  • Then, adhere the mat to the front of the card base.
  • After rubbing down a scrap piece of Real Red DSP with an embossing buddy, stamp the sentiment using VersaMark ink. The sentiment comes from the Stars at Night stamp set.
  • Cover the VersaMark ink with white embossing powder and heat set with a heat tool.
  • Crop the sentiment using the Stars at Night label die and adhere to the front of the card so it straddles the ribbon.
  • This card isn’t a quick and simple card by any means. However, MayMay’s tutorials prove that if you can trim and score cardstock, the twist-&-pop card is very doable! I hope you will give it a try!

Back to the Blog Hop:

We all hope you will follow the links below and hop along with us. There’s so much inspiration to be found here. We’d love to see what inspires you to create a fun fold as well. Don’t forget to upload it to the Creative Creases challenge!
